Why should I buy Windows 7 ?

Do you not use vista 64 all the time?!?! The "resource hog" idea is silly as why have the resources if you don't use them?? Iv never seen a game "run faster" because your on xp to vista or 7 :s

Anyway 7 is a more polished vista, looks better and runs a little better. Get a student upgrade for £40 and delete xp right now!

It might depend on what graphic card you have, I upgraded to win764 from XP32 so I could take advantage of DX10 & 11 with my GTX580 plus being able to use all my 6GB memory for gaming.
Apart from that I actually prefer XP for just about everything else as I find some things with 7 really annoying so I have both systems on separate drives.

What triggered me to get Win7 was Just Cause2, GAME ADVERT ALERT :D I bought it ages ago without realising it wouldn't play on XP & had it sitting on the shelf, it's worth changing just to enjoy the fantastic huge open world of go anywhere from the top of mountains to the bottom of the sea with superb streaming graphics,I still can't understand why other games can't do the same.

This is almost exactly my situation, apart from I have a GTX460 and not a 580. It was a game that triggered me to upgrade XP to Vista, as for day to day usage of Windows for emails and internet etc, I still boot XP, I only boot to Vista if I want to play certain games.

Thanks for all the replies guys, its been most helpful. Ive decided to stick with Vista as it appears I will not make any noticeable gains in changing to 7 when the machine is 99% of the time used for gaming. I'll have to wait and see when Win8 comes out, my guess is I will have to upgrade again sometime or make a tri-boot (if thats even possible) as future game releases will no doubt have a minimum of Windows 7 at some point in the future. Maybe when CoD 15 is out or BF6! :D

Am I one of a dying breed who still uses and prefers to use XP for general computing regardless of games?

I've had problems with XP drivers for newer hardware, I don't think hardware manufacturers are bothering much to get minor problems sorted for XP and concentrate on Vista/7. Equally so, updated legacy drivers are far and few for Windows 7. So the bottom line is whatever level your hardware is at, stick with XP for older hardware but upgrade for newer.

Good decision. 7 is much better than Vista, but that doesn't mean you should go out and buy 7 when Vista is doing everything you need and you don't have any problems with it.

Some people seem to forget that upgrades cost money. If the expense isn't going to bring you any benefit, why not spend the cash on something else which will?
