Why so few PCI slots?

Wireless cards and soundcards, to name but a few? PCIe versions aren't exactly popular or common, and they're no-doubt more expensive either.

Bit like the IDE/SATA thing, really.

Nothing like the IDE / SATA thing, really. SATA drives number more in almost any shop you care to mention. PCIe however is being forced upon us without the choice from manufacturers to make it feasible.

I've only got one NIC on my motherboard, so the other is PCI, PCI modem for faxing, PCI soundcard, and my PCI TV Tuner...there ARE c2d boards with up to and including 5 PCI slots.

My mobo has 3 PCI slots which are all being used.

It was something I made a point of looking for when I purchased my board.

All these PCI-E x1 slots on boards are a bit pointless atm.

Sorry, should have explained myself. IDE is mainly being clung to by the distinct absence of SATA optical drives. Starting to see them a bit more now, but for the most part they're usually IDE.

Bit of a crap comparison really, but perhaps you can see what I mean.
