I know there's a distinct risk of abuse being aimed at me for this question, such is life. I'm not attempting to troll.

It's a new version of windows. Which I believe can be installed on anything capable of running vista, and run swifter than vista, which is exciting. So why is there a sudden spike in hardware sales associated with its release?

I just saw a thread putting increases in ssd cost down to the windows 7 release date. This strikes me as absolute madness. Yet there are many spec me threads where people are choosing to buy new systems for windows 7. I don't get it.

Guess it's just ppl who have been waiting for an excuse to upgrade or ppl like myself who were still running xp I just bought another 2gb of ram since I can now use it.
Plus more ppl are going to be running dx10&11 gfx cards as again a lot of ppl are moving over from xp and are going to be able to use them now and may have put of a purchase till now.

but it could also just be were geeks and don;'t need an excuse to buy new toys:)

Also people buying new computers with Windows 7 as well... I haven't upgraded mine as it run's it fine I would, however, love a SSD / 5970 or such like...

Ditto would love to u/g to a SSD or 5850 but can't afford to atm, for a lot of people its nice to have an excuse to upgrade hardware and windows 7 is that perfect excuse.

For most people (yes, even expert users), upgrading an OS is more hassle than it's worth - you've got to backup/copy data, reinstall programs, reconfigure the OS as you had it before, etc. Doing a fresh install on a new machine is a lot easier as you have the old machine as backup until the new rig is up and running, plus it's exciting as you get to spend loads of cash on new shiny bits!

Obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but that's the general rule. I've been waiting to get a new PC for Win7 :)

Installing a new OS is easy - it's not hassle, I just haven't been bothered yet to install Home Premium W7.

As for why, it's just as fast as vista (maybe more so for me on my current RC build). Has tons of new features like the window snap, looks great, feels great.

I guess you might as well upgrade the OS if you're upgrading hardware. If you're planning a major upgrade involving a new mobo, you'd probably have to reinstall Windows anyway, so you might as well upgrade to the latest, especially with it being so cheap. Lots of people want SSDs too, and it's the perfect time to install 7 given that it has better support for them.

Plus people just like the feeling of a new OS on new hardware :p
