Why use Linux?

Write support is in, and its pretty stable these days. Especially using ntfs-fuse.

Yeah was going to say. I compiled a new kernel for my machine the other day and looking in the kernel options the write support was no longer flagged as experimental.

Oh another big reason for Linux which has already been touched on is the huge number of apps you get WITH the OS on install. With Windows (especially Vista) its about 2-3x bigger than a SuSE install for example and doesn't even include a nice ftp client or any office software, or any 3d rendering software etc etc

On every Windows/Linux dual boot system I have built all the distros have been able to read and write the NTFS Windows partition. That was using SuSE 9, 9.1, 9.3 and Ubuntu 5 & 6.06. It doesn't work the other way round though, Windows cannot access the Linux partitions.

just started using linux in anger recently, got gentoo installed on my laptop, everything worked a treat, just had to spend a bit of time on the dumbass ATI drivers.

was playing city of heroes yesterday at faster framerates than windows would run it!! this is through cedega, which admittedly i dont like to pay for but...at £3 a month it is not so bad...considering what i would have to pay for a firewall, anti virus, anti spyware and all the little 'extras' that you NEED to make windows a safe place to live.

as far as which distro, id recommend Gentoo, not billed as beginner as such, but you learn a whole lot about linux, configuration, etc. plus the documentation, wiki and forums are the best I've found.

just my $0.02

for a mac version there would need to be a bsd version, and although i believe that cedega can run on bsd, i do hear it is very problematic.

so in the short term...nope no mac cedega :( would be sweet as a nut though, a lot of people would switch to mac if they did manage to do it though.

I recently put Ubuntu Dapper on my Laptop, and apart from the occasional app that isnt available for Linux, like my SE software, i barely boot into windows on my laptop anymore.

Although i do still use Windows exclusivly on my primary system.

I recommend getting a few live CDs, try them out, pick your fave, and then set aside 20Gb or so so you can play with Linux. Its really quite harmless to do. :)
