Package managers are the savious for Linux in my books.
I can never get my head around .tar.gz but installing an rpm / deb file is eaier then even windows files... Wll, deb files are anyway.

you don't even need to manually install a .deb or .rpm, simply go into the package manager and if your distro has a GUI you can read descriptions about the program, look at alternatives then click the install button once, job done.
