Why wont my car sell?

Thanks again everyone great input. I have decided to drop her to 6.9k. In all honesty I have spent quite a bit on her recently, would have thought that showed my level of care.

Problem is the general buying public can pickup a reasonable spec 2008 Golf with that kind of mileage for around £2K less

Can they? Where? I'm not seeing any worth buying on AT.

Whilst IMHO it's a lot of money for what it is, it sits in line with other Golf GTIs of about the same age that aren't knackered chav wagons.

It shows some care, yes. The missing towing eye cover and chunked tyre counteract this though. It's what most potential buyers will judge the car on - not what it's got, but rather what's damaged or missing.

Had an edition 30 bumper on there before. Put the standard one back on and literally cant find the tow eye, Il just order a new one if its that big of an issue.

If you group in any of the reasonable spec 1.6-2.0 GT, GTI, TDI or FSI of about that age and mileage there isn't a lack of choice at around (very broadly) 2K cheaper and that is all the general public who are just buying a car for A to B see and what the OP is up against in terms of wider interest.

Why should he price his car against a GT or lower model? That is totally crazy.

Agreed, at £6995 I think it's reasonably well priced for the mileage and spec. There's nothing remotely similar for £2k less, to get a 2008 2.0L TFSi GTi for ~£5k means you will have to accept either something grotty or with much higher mileage.

bring it closer to 6k, the missing DSG box is what would turn potential buyers away at that price.

Given there's no difference between earlier models, the only reason to buy that one is for its age or colour. I bought a 55 plate (dsg) almost 2 years ago for 6k.

That's trade prices around this way with all the 'warranties' etc they come with, not to mention the VW diesel scandal will have hit prices slightly.

People buying from an owner expect a cheaper price because they don't get these assurances.

Also I'll be honest when I saw what it was I was thinking it would be around 6k tops even without your minor issues like the bit of missing tyre etc.

Definitely too expensive for a private sale. 6k would be more like it if you fixed the issues.

You have about 3 extras, no dsg and a year newer over mine and you're up for over 1.2k what I paid for mine at a trader in Jan.

Good you got a bargain, but I paid good money for this car, I think its definetly worth 7k, was yours white and 3 door? Like I said, If I dont get 7k I wont sell it.

Of course you think it's worth more than it really is, it's your car. The problem with that is, it doesn't really matter what you think it's worth, it only matters what someone is willing to pay for it, and judging by most of the responses here, that isn't as much as you hope.

Just keep it if you won't budge on price.

Exactly this.

Looking at other potential listings:

Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TFSI GTI 5dr (2008, 83k miles) = £5,275
Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TFSI GTI 3dr (2008, 60k miles) = £5,990

I'm betting the number of doors and the colour of the car are pretty low down on peoples wishlist of features.

Have you asked any traders what they'd buy it off you for? That'll give you a bit of a baseline figure to go on.

Also how many miles are you doing each year?

It's an 08 plate, so already ~7 years old. If you're clocking in 20k+ miles a year, then next year it'll be an 8 year old car with over 100k on the clock.
Going by current prices, i think you'd then struggle to sell it for any more than ~5k.

We bought a black 07 GTI DSG with 71,000 for just over £7k end of last year - had every option bar xenons as well as the 18" Diamond cut wheels. I think it's just too expensive!

Ebay is best. I always stick it on pistonheads for a week or 2 because its free for me. Hear nothing then stick it on eBay and always sold within a week.

Safe to say it's just a buyers market at the moment.

I'm having a lot of interest, but holding out for what I feel the car is worth. This could be very naive on my part!
