Why won't my Q6600 do 3.2GHz?

My pc has never been prime stable tbh - always fails, so i just say to myself, if its game stable and 3dmark vantage stable, and it never crashes, then to hell with prime95! lol

:p

Do you guys think it would clock better with an Asus P5Q SE mobo? P45 chipset. There's a few floating round for about £30.

possibly but never having used a p45 i can't say for sure.
i would be confident that an ip35 pro could get it higher though.
even only at 3-3.1ghz though your's will be performing close to a phenom II x4 955 or QX6800 though so it's no slouch

Probably would yeah, even a decent p35 board will probably be better than the board you're using. Something is not quite right about what you're getting out of that chip.

That's true. But still, this mobo is old and not very good anymore. The onboard LAN doesn't even work anymore lol.

Prime still going strong at 390x8 btw. :p

I have a p45 giga board EP45-UD3LR and its super stable for 3.2ghz with a q6600 very highly recomended :)
2 sticks of ram is allso more stable than 4 sticks like other folks have said as your stressing the northbridge harder not the actual ram.
Have you tried using just 2 sticks of ram?

Only other voltage ive played around with other than Vcore is Vdimm upping to 2.1v to enable my ram to be stable at 800mhz 4-4-4-12 rather than stock timings off 5-5-5-18 i run 2 x 2gb sticks thou.
Few weeks back when a m8 was over for a LAN sesh we struggled to get his q6600 past 3ghz stable too on a P35 board 4x 1gb ram setup.
We ended up over 1.5 Vcore and couldnt control the heat so gave up at 3ghz.
All mobos are deffo not equal thats for sure :) my last board a asus P5N-E SLI was total useless for OCing this q6600. Only at 1.5v could i get a nearly stable (prime was oki but IBT failed) 2.8ghz and it ran around 20degs hotter! using the same ram and psu etc.

I won't go into voltages etc as loads of people have given worthwhile advice already on this. I myself have a bad q6600 - it would only clock to 3.2 intitially. 4 things made a big difference to mine.

1. Lapping the CPU
2. Lapping the Cooler
3. Tidying the inside of the case and setting up the fans correctly
4. Applying high quality Artic Silver

Just doing these relatively easy steps I went from 3.2ghz to 3.6ghz - it will do 3.8 but gets a little too hot for my liking at this although prime stable.

I am no expert on lapping but just followed some utube tutorials all you need is some fine sandpaper (halfords do a mixed pack), a largish mirror (for a perfectly flat service) and some parcel tape (to tape the sand paper to the mirror). Remember the aim is to get a perfectly flat surface on both the CPU and the cooler base. When its done it should be so well matched that when you place the cooler ontop of the CPU you can lift the cooler and the CPU lifts with it as a vacuum forms because the 2 surfaces are so well matched.
