From what I've heard ebay side with the buyer regardless.

I sold a guitar and the buyer messaged asking to have it for free, then began sending abusive messages. I reported him and ebay did absolutely nothing.

Not entirely true. My brother sold an iPhone. Buyer returned it a couple of weeks later after water damaging it and with a different charger. He contacted ebay , and after a couple of weeks they decided in his favour, not the buyers.

They aren't always that smart. A guy at work had his laptop stolen and they just went and listed it on ebay from their own address. He bid on it and won, got the guy's address and sent the police round lol. They got it back but the insurers had already paid out for it, so he wasn't allowed to keep it.

Honestly the only time I've been scammed on eBay was from a Google Play voucher I didn't want, so whatever. All my high value items have been pretty painless. I do always mention in the listing that serials and everything are noted down and recorded, so it probably dissuades those looking for easy targets?

It is when you don't take those steps (recording serials, taking photos of item before posting etc) that you let yourself exposed to these scammers.

Isn't this just a well known trick, where you list items on one of those free listing days, something nobody would want to buy. Then use it as a holding place auction until you do actually have something to sell and change everything in the listing thus saving money.

For the OP's question my guess would be to get "free" CPU's etc from other companies - i.e buy broken chip on eBay, buy real chip from big multi-national company, tell company that the chip doesn't work and you want a refund, send company the broken chip in the real chip packaging and claim a refund - now you have a real chip AND your money back AND you've proved that you're a huge poopbag who does illegal stuff.

Correction, it costs legit buyers as retailers will just push margin higher on everything else
