i used to be quite good at this but i'm not now unfortunately.

system: 2gb pc with XP and running 3800+ at 2.8ghz.

reason/symptom: pc crashed and wouldn't reboot. would turn on fine but would only ever get as far as the progress bar loading windows before it reset.

what i did: to test it i ran F8 to bring up the menu options before loading windows. tried all of them and it crashed on all of them.
then tried to reinstall windows: wouldn't even get as far as reading/formatting the hard drive before it crashed.
then tested: memory. one stick in every channel and tested both sticks on own. same issues. changed SATA cable. same issues.
luckily i found an SATA hard drive that was my old one and it works. so connected it up and it ran/installed first time!!
then after installing 200+ poxy updates for windows i thought i'd try the other hard drive again to see if i could see what the issue was. it ran fine... but it suffered a lot of corrupt file issues with windows and windows copied a load of files which i then deleted. i formatted the windows segment (had partitioned it thank god) and every runs fine! i can access all my files now fine.

was it just a file corruption? why wouldn't it even load windows the first time to avoid all the aggro?:mad:

Maybe it was the SATA cable coming lose or being faulty? This then corrupted the installation, so when you swapped cables it didn't help as the damage was already done.

Not sure it could be a few other things. Have you scanned the old hard drive with the manufacturers testing software from DOS to make sure it is healthy? I know it works now but it is what I'd do at this point.

That happened to me on Windows XP when it was updating to SP3 and then the installer crashed. It was totally fubar'ed and I had to reinstall windows, losing all data on that drive.

just odd. i run adaware and spybot weekly, and use zonealarm. never had any trouble in the 2 or 3 years its been running like that.

a poosible issue with the sata cable i suppose. hmmmm.

Same here but it also killed the hard drive :(
