Wide Angle Lens (Landscape Photography) for Canon DSLR ?

I'm just happy listening to you guys and gaining valuable insight :)

As it is I think I will rent the 11-16 Tonika lens, so that should the northern lights appear I'll have a decent chance of getting some good images. It works out to £50 a week, when I come back off Holiday I'll save up for my own wide angle lens which may well be the Canon 10-18.

Just purchased the manfrotto befree tripod today and now need a CPL filter (probably the Marumi DHG Super Circular Polarising 58mm Filter) and a shutter remote then I should be just about set (still need a couple of spare batteries and lens hood)

Off to Lumsdale Waterfall (in the Peak District) at the weekend to practice photographing long exposures with my new gear! :)

Yeah I've been tempted to rent quite a few times but the price usually puts me off. It's an easy way to try a lens but when you're paying 20-25% of the total price just to use it for a week then it seems a bit harsh. If you had the time and the patience you could buy a second hand one and sell it on after for practically nothing :)

CPL filters can be useful but they don't add much to the exposure lengths if that's what you're hoping for (you mentioned long exposures). If you want long exposures (especially during the day) then you'll need something much darker.

Still ultimately undecided on the lens thing. I might go for a second hand or new lens in a couple of weeks time or something.

Bought a CPL filter today, thats just really for general landscapes though in daylight to reduce reflections and bring out colours.

I bought a nice little cheap 10 stop filter recently to give it a go and it turned out alright. Once you know what lens you're going to get you might wanna try them out.

Pretty good for £10 it turned out :)

Totally different? I did say it was a slightly different focal length :P Totally seems to be overstating it a little.

To be honest, since I got the 18-35mm lens I find myself taking the same shots with that which I might have needlessly used the 10-22mm for before.

UWA lenses are awesome but I'm sure I'm not the only one which has had to learn where/when they're really needed. I guess it's hard to learn without having out though.

Yes, there really is that much difference:

Ultra-wides aren't for everyone or every shot and I appreciate what you're saying and that "standard" wide lenses are often enough for many people. That said, don't underestimate how much wider the ultra-wides are. The difference between 10mm and 18mm may not sound much but it really is.

There's no question that there's a big difference between 10mm and 18mm (I keep two lenses for that reason). It's just that I'd just never consider a wide zoom lens and a UWA zoom lens as totally different... Just semantics I guess! :) A UWA zoom and a telephoto are more totally different to me.

I love the UWA, been using it more and more. In my (humble) opinion SMR, consider the lens set(!) you might want to end up with. I did a few exchanges/sales but ended up with:

Canon 10-22 for UWA, scenery type stuff
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 for general / walkabout use, works OK at low light for party/show shots too (the 10-22 & 17-55 were my main investment in glass)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens - for animals/zoos because I can't afford a better telephoto :) - incidentally this lens is currently ridiculously cheap, I paid nearly £300 for it 2 years ago - it's now under £140 + a further £25 off from Canon! (offer ends 21 Jan)
Cheap nifty fifty 50mm prime for low light / portrait / macro hacking purposes :)

That 55-250 might come in handy for when I go to Formula 1 events? Seems like a great price.
