I recently got a 19" WS which runs at a native 1440x900, but some games are not liking this resolution so I want to turn the res down a touch, but which resolutions are widescreen?

For instance in rFactor I can select:

1440x900
1360 x 768
1280 x 800
1280 x 720
1152 x 864
1088 x 612

I used to run at 1280x960 on the CRT and the GFX card could cope so looking for a widescreen res equivalent to that really, sorry if this is a totally dumb question :)

It's easiest to tell you what the standard 4:3 resolutions are. After that you can probably assume anything else is widescreen.

These resolutions...

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200

...are all used by standard non-widescreen monitors.

Another test is to divide the x resolution (e.g. 640) by the y resolution (480). If it comes out around 1.3333 then it's 4:3. If it comes out around 1.6 then it's widescreen.

1280x800 or your native 1440x900 are the closest matches to your old crt res for performance. Dunno your exact specs but with my rig I can play most new games great in those resolutions and even bump it up to my tft's native of 1680x1050 without problems a lot of the time :)

Its a 7800 GS (AGP) I guess it should be fine, maybe the PC was just running a bit off last night, will test it out again tonight, although I do have the AA and AF bumped up which might just have pushed it over the edge, cheers all

Thought I would drag up this old thread, anyway still got the same card and monitor and some games are pushing things a bit too much, so I want to select a lower res, but it seems I am now missing all the other options I used to have and can only pick between 1440x900, 1024x768 and 800x600, have tried new graphics drivers and still wont show the other resolutions, any ideas what I can do?

Only thing I can think of is I changed to a DVI cable, would this stop those other resolutions showing?

With the nvidia control panel you can set your own custom resolutions (I think)

If not you certainly can in Rivatuner

Yeah there's some bugs in the latest nvidia drivers and some resolutions are just plain missing from the list. Load up the nvidia control panel, click 'manage custom resolutions' then click 'create'. Now put '1280' and '800' in the resolution boxes, click 'advanced', put timing standard on 'GTF' (very important or the test will fail), then click Test and then after it's done testing click OK.

Now you should be able to use 1280*800 just fine. Your screen is 16:10 btw, and 1280*800 is the only 16:10 resolution below 1440*900 IIRC and it's widely supported, so it's ideal for you.
