I'm thinking of getting a widescreen, i'm aware that a number of games don't support the resolutions but it seems that more are starting to. Before I make the plunge though i have a few questions!

  • On the desktop you obvioulsy have to move your mouse further to the left or right to get to either side of your desktop, is this the same when changing a camera position in games?
  • What response time should i be looking for?
  • What games have you had issues with?
  • I currently have a dell 1280x1024 TFT, if i use the monitor at any other resolution it looks really poor does this tend to be the case with the widescreens currently on the market?
  • What would be your recomendations?

:) Cheers :)

Hi DHR,

I'm not sure how you mean? on RTS the bigger resolution means you see more of the screen, so in that aspect, yes you need to move your mouse further. I'm not sure how this applies in FPS though.

What response time should i be looking for?

Ofc with any monitor, the lowest the better, anything under 12ms should be fine though.

I currently have a dell 1280x1024 TFT, if i use the monitor at any other resolution it looks really poor does this tend to be the case with the widescreens currently on the market?

I can only speak from my experience and say no, However ive only tried with a couple of monitors.

What would be your recomendations?

It all depends on your budget!! however, i would recommend the NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2 20.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor. It has this awesome look to it, almost glassy. Very crisp clear picture and ultra low 6ms.

Can be found here:

NEX 20WGX2

Dont forget to check the Monitors Section of the forum also :-)

I have a Dell 2405fpw

Best monitor ever, and i dont notice the supposed 'lag' some people comment on.

Not sure how the newer 07 models compare...

i've got a belina 20.1" widescreen, max resolution 1680x1050. i'm more than happy with it, in fact if it was a woman i'd marry it. the only issues i've had are games not supporting the widescreen resolutions, it does look stretched and a bit strange, but certainly not unplayable, empire earth 2 is an example as was quake 4 i seem to remember.

you have a wider field of vision using the widescreen resolutions so extra moose movement is mitigated by the fact that you see more. i've never found it an issue, if it is then i increase mouse/scroll speed. half life 2 looks fantastic, as does civ 4 works, ut2004, gta:san andreas, company of heroes, planetside, COH - can't think of my other games that do atm! but it's well worth investing.

Don't let response times sway you towards one TFT to another. It's an unreliable selling point. Just listen to the recommendations of people on this forum. :)

Widescreen is fab. End of.
Oh and Quake 4 does support widescreen, I think need to install latest patch (1.3/1.4?) With the dual core support.

AOE looks brilliant and offers a lot more onscreen. I wouldn't get a 4:3 TFT for gaming now.

edit Quake 4 does support 16:9 and 16:10 ratio, running at 1680x1050 dual core, 4x AA :D

Dont forget that some monitors support 1:1 pixel mapping so if the game doesn't support the WS res you can still play at a 4:3 resolution with borders on the edge if you dont like it being stretched.

I have a Dell 2007WFP and have no problems with ghosting etc. Not all games will run in widescreen as default but This Website has a A-Z list of games with workarounds such as just changing values in a games config file. I have the original Call Of Duty running in widescreen with no problems. FEAR can also be made to run in widescreen :D

I've currently got a HIS ATI X800 GTO 256Mb i get away with running oblivion at 1280x1024 on medium settings, the higher res will seirously slow things down. With it running on a higer res though does it look reasonably smooth without AA?

I currently have a Viewsonic 2025WM 20" monitor which is run at 1680 x 1050 off a x850XT. The widescreen experience is just lovely, and the monitor well worth the pennies, even though its gonna get sold next week due to a laptop DTR purchase :D.

Ive got the same monitor and that site is excellent for finding out how to make games get widescreen resolutions.

If not, you can either set the monitor to display as Full (all of the screen) and if its not a widescreen res the ones ive played where they are streached dont look bad at all.

The only thing i sometimes have problems with is tearing in some games which can get annoying as even with vsync enabled in the game it still sometimes happens

I get pretty bad tearing in FEAR...I only got a 9800 Pro graphics card so it's pretty much unplayable with vsync enabled. COD2 looks and runs great though :D

same here, the only other games ive noticed it on is need for speed underground 2 and nfs most wanted.

I've been a stalwart CRT user when it comes to gaming (4:3 aspect) so never even considered TFTs really until the Widescreen 20" models started to appear, which is a comparible vertical size and res to what my 19" CRT ran at. I had someone in the family using the NEC widescreen for gaming and was imediately impressed, along with the obvious advances with that particular TFT (fast response etc)...it just feels more natural. I promptly bought one and haven't looked back :)
