i have had one of my HDDs since september its a 500gb hitachi sata drive, it has been in an external caddy and the other week i went to one of the folders and there was nothing in there when there should have been about 50gig of data.

i was a bit confused so i turned it off and on again and the data was there so i thought it was a connection issue. it happed again a few times as well as some of the data could be seen but not accessable. i was a bit worried so i put it inside the machine so i could run some diagnostics, HD sentinal picked up 66 bad sectors, i copyed all the data off it.

i downloaded the hitachi diagnostic tools and booted it up, i ran the diagnostics both the short and long one and it found no faults. i then tryed HD tune and again no faults except the SMART data saying there has been 66sectors moved to a different part of the drive.

could the bad sector reading in the SMART data have been caused by a bad cable or is there something wrong with the drive. can i RMA it as there are no reported faults in the diagnostic tools.

i have filled the HDD with copys of data and there were no write/read problems
