I am sure this has been asked a million times but I cant ever seem to educate myself on this one - Can anyone help with this?

My WiFi in the house is fast on the net I can download files or stream videos at great speeds.

Not sure on how much of a compassion this is but if I download a 150mb file the WiFi will download it in MB/ps where as when I use my Ethernet its more in the KB/ps range.

Is there a specific reason for this?

My router is nothing fancy its a TalkTalk one I could list the specific model when I get home.

PC motherboard is Asus Z170 Pro and that's what im running my Ethernet cable from.

Can list anymore info needed.

The Ethernet should achieve your full line speed.

The wireless shouldn't be any faster than the Ethernet.

Make sure you aren't mixing up lowercase 'b' (bits) with uppercase 'B' (bytes) - eight bits to the byte.

Thats what I thought as well but the WiFi currently is definitely faster.

No I didnt think the check that actually but it is a LOT slower

A direct wired connection? No Powerline adapters in use for example?

Have you tried a different cable?

Nothing on the PC or router imposing quality of service settings?

Have you tried safe mode with networking?

Yes direct cable from the back of the router to the Ethernet port on the PC

Yes a yellow and a black - Think the black is type 5C?

Its slow as it is but its slower if someone is online on a console for example

No I haven't tried safe mode

Thanks

Have you manually installed a driver for the network card, or is it using one that windows has chosen all by it's self?

If it's the later then I would grab the drivers off the Asus site. There will probably be a light on the router to show the connection speed, either 10Mbs or 100 Mbs (or maybe even 1000) which speed is it showing?

Would need to check this - I did use the install disc from ASUS but will find out tonight what driver it is using and report back the speeds.

From memory I don't think there is a light but if there is I will report back as well.

Thanks for the help guys

Also just to add if this info will help at all when I run my PS4 with the WiFi its slow but the second I use the Ethernet cable its fast so its the opposite.

Looking on your motherboard, if you have GameFirst installed, uninstall it. Software like that that "optimises" your NIC to make it prioritise games is snake oil and can sometimes even cause issues.

Can you also check the speed the network controller is connected at? Right click the network icon in the notification tray at the bottom right, network and sharing centre, the ethernet connection and then under "Speed".

What device are you using to test the wifi?

Hi Guys,

No game-first had a look and not there

Have removed the installed Intel driver for the adapter and downloaded the one on Asus's site for my board - Oddly it was also an Intel driver - Does that sound correct?

When I check the connection speed in the network and sharing center it is showing 1GBps

The Wifi is just a TP link USB receiver

It's an Intel NIC so it'll use an Intel driver. It may be branded/repackaged by the motherboard manufacturer, but it'll still be the Intel driver.

Thanks for explaining

Bledd - I am thinking of trying another cable is there anything you would recommend?

Orcvader - Yes TP link receiver was plugged into the PC's USB port but I haven't tested the connection I will do this tonight when home then remove and test the wire connection.

After updating the drivers I didn't get much more done last night as Fallout 4 took over :) Hopefully the driver update has made a change somewhere.

Well its either the drivers or the new cable but I now have proper net again thanks guys.

Tested and Have 30mb down and the upload is 2mb but its never been more than this.

Cheers,
