Hi all

My aunty has just joined origin broadband and been supplied with an Asus router. When connected to her usual phone socket in the sitting room where the phone is also connected (with appropriate filter), the router shows all the relevant LEDs but no WiFi network shows up on my phone or her computer.

If I move the router to another phone socket, the same LEDs light on the router but the devices do connect via WiFi.

Does anyone know why WiFi will work in one phone socket but not another?

The phone works fine in the socket that the router doesn't work in.

The wireless should work whether it's plugged into a phone socket or not.

It might for some reason not get a broadband connection when plugged into a different socket, but the wireless should still work (and you'll be able to connect to the router's configuration pages).

For comparison you want to be trying wired connections as well if you can. It'll help you find whether it is just a wireless issue, or something more general.

That's what I expected. But standing here next to the router with my phone there is no sign of the routers WiFi connection (despite the WiFi led being lit on the router). A TalkTalk TV box connected via a wire to the router has a connection.

I've just no idea why I can't see the WiFi whilst right next to the router.

Is it the phone socket or just the location?

If the place the router in the dead spot and leave it unplugged is there wireless?

Do you have a device you can run a wireless scanner on?

So I moved the desktop PC into the sitting room where the router should be. Once I connected the desktop via Ethernet and logged into the router home page, the WiFi sprung into life and my phone could see and connect and use the connection. I disconnected the Ethernet cable and the desktops wifi could also see the WiFi network no problem.

I then restarted the computer and my phone and now neither can see the WiFi again. The router hasn't been touched.

As soon as I connected the desktop to the router via Ethernet again, the WiFi network suddenly became visible on my phone (but my phone hasn't connected to it for some reason).

Right router was broadcasting on channel 1. Manually changed to 7 and my phone has connected perfectly even after two restarts.
