Hello networking gurus! I need to borrow your expertise please!

I've had a problem since end of last week where my wifi connection has just dropped in speed like a bomb, from 48-54mbs to 1 consistently. This was with a Linksys WUSB54GS adaptor on Vista 64 to a Netgear DG834N literally at the bottom of the stairs, probably 8m straight line distance and one floor. I figured I'd try a new adaptor so bought a Netgear WN121T yesterday and problem is even worse, but at least the software with that works with Vista properly and is showing me that Im getting around 80%+ signal and getting 1mbps. I've tried swapping channels to 2 from 6, added my computer as a trusted device even though access control is off and all the time I can't get above 1mbs, even if 130mbs pops up for a moment.

What's even more frustrating is my other half has no such problems the other side of the room with a belkin wireless g usb adaptor and usually gets 36Mbps, and she is even further away! I've tried the router upstairs in the next room although doesnt get adsl signal on that extension although the wireless signal was still 1Mbps. Router is on master socket downstairs with filtered faceplate, Be Unlimited connecting around 8.5mb if thats any use. WoW DCs me instantly and Im not far off grabbing a giant cat 5 cable and running a giant Cat5 cable up the stairs now! Any help appreciated...

any reason you are using channel 6 instead of the default 11? How close is the router to a wall and could you have a lot of interference around the first computer? Something has changed, its just a case of determining what. Have you tried moving the first computer around the room?

Default seemed to be 6 on 'auto' selection and options only go upto 7. I've since tried again with channel 4, was ok for a while at 270mbps but then after 20mins or so dropped back down 1 mbps and lost connection completely.

One thing that puzzles me is why it seems to be showing a couple of channels in the netgear smart wizard, ie now its on its showing 4&8, when it was on 2, showed another channel as well (different) ??

In terms of changes, I did OC my cpu for the first time last weekend, went up from E6600 at 2.4 to 3.0 on a P5W-DH and moved a couple cables around in the case, but not seeing any other problems with other usb stuffs? Pc position hasnt changed either but if no joy I might move around at weekend. Could this be some kind of conflict with Netgear Smart Wizard / Wireless Zero in Vista, even though it asks which to use when starting the application?

Thanks, M

Something else I've noticed on this adaptor (after being unable to connect to the network again) is that the speed seems to go up with other channels detetcted, ie if SMART WIZARD shows channel 3 as set on router connection is at 1Mbps, if it shows 3,7 then it goes up to 270Mbps... is this related? It always shows, the same second channel as well, ie if its on 3, its always showing 7 half the time as well??

Yeah thats powered off at the moment while her machine isn't on.

neibouring wifis been started up?

ham radio

new phones or video sender

microwaving the turkey (kills my network)

bad auto update via windows update been applied?

Nothing else like this has been added as far as I know, bar an update for the onboard wifi on the P5W-DH which I broke the aerial for ages ago, that's disabled now anyway.

Contacted Netgear who said to return it for a another one, but have also tried it on the XP machine and it worked fine at 240+Mbps! Just seems to be a Vista-hate problem... The one thing is SMART WIZARD is pretty good at picking up other local wifi networks and none seem to be on same channel. Have now done a fresh install, problem still same so sticking to my big cable for now.
