Firstly, apologies if any one thinks this is posted in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure so went for in here as it isn't overly a technical question but something say someone who travels a lot for business may know of.

I am looking for roaming wifi options for use when abroad on a laptop and iPhone. Mainly EU countries, Japan, and the USA. Trying to save money on mobile data roaming charges I suppose as well as flexibility with the laptop.

I have found BT's international wifi roaming offer - how good/common are the companies it partners with though? Any one know of any thing else like this?

Thank you
Michelle

I would imagine that this is a complete waste of money. Lots of coffee shops, bars, resutarants, hotels and even some shops offer free wifi across the world.

Pretty much this.

I was never more than a 5 minute walk from an open WiFi hotspot wherever I was in Florida, heck even random little stalls dotted around appeared to have free WiFi.

And this.

Heck even in Malta this summer I was never more than 5 minutes walk away from WiFi. Some cafes had cottoned on to the idea of securing theirs and giving out the password to customers on the menu, but that was fair enough :).

Everything that's been said above is exactly what you need to know.

I've spent a month in the French Alps and weeks in the Scottish highlands and never needed to be signed up to that BT OpenZone malarkey!

Use free WiFi where you can get it and pay for it when you can't.

Most of them use an encryption key. I would presume you would have to buy something from them in order to get the key

As above really.
Even somewhere with hideously expensive wifi like an airport, it'll probably still be cheaper than roaming from the UK.

Just walk around and find an unsecured wifi from someone's house and use it.

What I did when on holiday in France, Italy, Holland etc etc.

Just be careful when connecting to strange wifi spots as some of them can be left open deliberately to lure in unsuspecting victims who at best end up with a nasty virus, could potentially have their account details stolen or worse.

I can just imagine sitting on someones garden wall with a lappy and a flask of tea :D

I did exactly this outside my friend's pub in Cambridge :p Gets you some very odd looks, but possibly actually slightly more acceptable than being on the pub doorstep 3 hours before opening time...
