Wifi sigal keeps dropping out.

Hello everyone i have a netgear DG834G Router and for some reason it keeps dropping out on the wireless signal. It has been doing it for a very long time and its damn annoying. All of the firmware is up to date, all of the wireless addapters on all of the devices it connects too are up to date. I have taken my phone and laptop to a mates house and connected to his wifi and it was fine.

Anyone got any ideas why it does it

Hey man thanks for the reply I tried all of the main channels and they are all as bad as each other. Will custom firmware make a difference or ir might have to be new router time :(
 
change of router probably won't change much, wi-fi pollution is killing most people's connections in busy areas!!!
 
My DG384GT does the same thing. It used to lose wifi signal once a week but these days it's mostly every day around tea time. The only solution is to go into the Wireless settings in the menu and disable wireless access point, then apply, then enable and apply. This brings the wifi back online for all devices. No need to reboot or anything. I used to run Sky firmware but not run DG Team but there is no difference to the phenomenon. My devices will connect to the router for a few seconds but get booted off within 5 or 6 seconds and remain unable to connect.

I switched to an usused channel too and it had little or no effect.
 
Mine does this as well. I have always just put it down to being too warm and turned it off for 10 secs or so.
 
New router or custom firmware wont clear the area.....unless you upgrade to a 5Ghz model and upgrade all your NICs. There is considerably less usage on 5Ghz
 
Router placement is everything, where is the wireless dropping ideally you want the router as near to the ceiling as possible imo.
 
Hehehe welcome to the hell that can be wireless. I've pretty much given up on wireless in some places as it just doesn't work as well as it can. My little 'un has been poorly so I can give a bit more thought to this problem now. Getting a 5ghz router will go some way to solving the problem, as said above there is much less congestion, but on the downside you'll need a new wireless adapter's and unless it's a dual-band router then other devices won't work (phone's, laptops, Wii, Xbox, PS3). I much prefer to cable as much as possible now...my son won't go back to wireless after seeing what a sorted wired network is like. Router placement CAN help, but usually only masks the problem and results in a better signal. A newer router could help, but as I imagine the amount of wireless devices is only going to rocket upwards it might be an idea to go the 5ghz route or attempt cables...
 
I had a similar problem when I added a new computer to my network when all the others were fine. Initially I thought the wifi card was at fault after changing WiFi channels, specifying IP's etc. As a last resort I found resetting router and then changing the channel actually fixed it though.

Unfortunately networking is one of those things though that there are so many variables from each setup that it can be very difficult to troubleshoot.
 
Yup, maybe I was a bit harsh above. You can generally get better performance as suggested by changing channel. 1,6,11 are best, choose one of those that appears less congested and off you go. WPA protection sometimes makes things worse, so if you believe that you're safe choose WEP instead. I don't recommend turning off security completely however..If you try relocating router, changing channels etc. you might be able to get a reasonable connection
 
Thank you all for the help I have added my MAC address to the WiFi and turned on the access list filtering and so far its going well I have a strong signal I hope this is a fix :D

I'm in an apartment block and the G signal is very noisy even on one of the less used channels. I've added a Linksys router as a 5GHz N AP and it's blissful.

Not everything can use it as not all N devices are 5GHz, such as the iPhone 4.
