Is there any free /cheap enough for 1 use tools anyone can point me to? I have a floorplan and would like to get a better mapping of where would be the best place to put some access points for the house and outbuilding.
There are, but they aren't free. Doing this work would usually be a several step process - you do a predictive survey on a floor plan, then you put an AP in the locations that the predictive survey suggested and get actual data in the space, and then you do another survey after the APs have been installed to verify that it meets the design goals. Basic apps that you walk around with on a phone don't really help much, especially with sources of interference that aren't Wi-Fi. Companies like Ekahau make these systems.
If you are using Android you can use WiFiman for doing a heat map (not sure if you can on iOS). I then drew out the floorplan scanned it on to my PC, and then overlayed the heatmap image/export from my phone. Easy peasy.
I know it is rough but it does the job. Example when I was mapping out my bro's house:

I'm trying to combine ping, arp, oui and later wireshark into all-in-one CLI app with TUI.
