Wii Gaming

My kids love playing the Wii games, especially the ones with motion controls like Wii Sports!

Luckily they dont really care about how bad it looks on modern large 4K screens!

What are your thoughts on the Wii becoming a popular retro console like the PS2, Gamecube, GBA and the DS? I dug mine out of the loft, that I bought in 2014 along with Mario Galaxy (which I never played much - it was mostly used for Mario Party I think it is called when my wife had her friends round).

I've seen the big games are relatively cheap compared to DS and Gamecube, with Zelda Twilight Princess being £8 and Skyward Sword being £12. Mario Galaxy £12.

I never really played on the Wii so I'm going to try Mario Galaxy and maybe pick up a Zelda and see how they hold up. I suspect the motion controls will be the main reason I give up (and also the main reason it isn't becoming a desirable retro console beyond gamecube games over 480p component) but we'll see.

Any game recommendations other than Mario Galaxy and 'a Zelda'?

Personally, I think the Wii and Wii U, should be in most retro gamers collections. They can be had for such a cheap price, nice cheap official component cables for the Wii or better yet HDMI for Wii U. The earlier Wii models have native GC support and others can be modded to add back in. There are benefits from using the Wii/U and running GC games, such as better performance. However, there are also some potential drawbacks in image quality. I believe some of the loaders have options to remove deflicker and other stuff Nintendo added that degrade the image quality on HDTVs. The GC and Wii libraries were awesome and on top of that has a great selection of 'light gun' games that have been ported over - Ghost Squad was particularly great!

I've recently picked up a WII U and it's really good, I was hoping to be able to play wii games on it without it dropping into the wii mode, but overall I think a must for every retro console collection.

I've recently been given a Wii and picked up a few games cheap. Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong etc. Looking forward to setting it up and seeing how it looks.

You're in for a treat!

By the way - you may need to get a HDMI adapter for your TV. I got the "Wii 2 HDMI" one and it works well.

Thanks, yes just ordered one of those adapters after realising my TV doesn't have any composite input :o I think it should be a good bit of fun over Christmas. I've dug my GameCube controller and games from the loft as well.

When the whole family gets together, the kids love playing Wii Sports multiplayer and its pretty much the only thing they play!

I wondered about a wii for the kids recently especially for these group gatherings / games. Used to play them loads with friends in our 20's to death in fact.

My girls are 4 & 8 though so may take some time to get used it.

They would love it if they anything like my kids!

Especially games with motion control - they seem to more easily understand what they need to do as opposed to controller button co-ordination.

Wii sports bowling, golf and tennis are a big hit!

Ah Wi iU plays them ok. Or spend money on a decent up-scaler.

I agree with this. A Wii U makes Wii games look reasonable enough on 4K TV's. A Wii using component cables through a scaler such as the GBS Control will look slightly better than the Wii U.

I already own a GBS Control but decided to go for the Wii U as it can play GameCube, Wii and Wii U after a bit of tinkering.

Wii U is such an underrated console.

Wii U is such an underrated console.

It's fantastic. It can play three generations of Nintendo consoles natively, GameCube, Wii and Wii U plus can emulate N64, SNES and NES. It can also emulate the DS using the tablet as the second screen. A Wii U and a Switch 2, assuming its backwards compatible with Switch 1, will play nearly all of the Nintendo library.

I'm currently playing through Wind Waker HD and it still looks fantastic. The tablet is used for the map and inventory management. It's a shame no one else has done the two screen set up since.

I loved the two screen setup too!

Ah, that's a dilemma I have. I'm currently playing some Nintendo classics on my SNES classic but would like to move on to trying some GC and Wii titles at some point - my thoughts are to get a Wii for Wii and GC (component cable, best picture) but the HD remake of two Zelda games on Wii U (inc that feature) do sound fun. I'd otherwise be buying the GC version of one and the Wii version of the other (where I understand the screen is flipped horizontally and the sword can be controlled right handed using motion control).
