Just turned on the wii for the kids to play and I get these lines down the screen. They go all the way across when playing.

Has the graphics gone. Was fine a couple of days ago.

And its out of warranty. Purchased dec 2008

Now is this fit for purpose, 18 months old and broken.

Go to the official nintendo website and u can find a repair service for Wii and DS.

You have to pay mind but not near the same as buying a whole new console again.

This problem is more prevalent when you have the 24hour thing turned on. This effectively is leaving the console on all the time and puts a lot of wear on the console.

I've had mine since launch week and not had any issues with leaving it on (in the Wii connect 24 mode) ...

Might think about turning it off fully as am using it a lot less now - but that'll change once Mario Galaxy 2 arrives ;)

Just plugged the wii back in. Its been unplugged for a couple of days.

And now no graphics problems.

Rest assured, it'll come back... I'd get the ball rolling right away on a repair. Is it under warranty? If so take it back to the shop and swap it out, so that you don't have to wait on Nintendo to swap it out. (2-3weeks)

nope not under warranty dec 08 purchased. And its not on 24/7. I have a power saver for TV so its connected to that and at night its off.

I don't know why they thought 50% of the running power with no fan would be ok. Initially they tried to pass it of as bad batch of launch GPU's, but its still happening.
