Wii or 360?

I'm thinking about getting a new console and am trying to decide between the Wii and the Xbox360. I've wanted a Wii since they came out, the new styles of play that it has seem really fun, but I'm abit worried that its abit, well, 'backwards' technology wise. Although graphics aren't everything you still want to be impressed when you unpack your new toy.

I mostly play online PC games and only use the consoles when people come round, normally playing 'fun' games like monkeyball or Buzz!, but Xbox live really appeals to me- console fun but online and multiplay (I never play singleplayer games any more).

So..... Does the xbox360 have many 'fun' games that are just a laugh when people come round, and what is the Wii like for online gaming?

360 doesn't have many fun quick play games, guitar hero 2 is the standout, although some live arcade games are very good for this.

Wii doesn't have a very good online service, with i think only one game at the moment that is online (mario strikers).

Your never going to get the complete package from either console

360 is the best for online gaming and single player gaming

Wii is best for party games and local multiplayer.

So either get both or decide which is most important to you and which is likely to be most useful to you.

And in case you need any help persuading, Halo 3, 4 player co-op online :D

Xbox 360 is excellent online, I dont bother with my PC anymore in that respect, but also have a Wii to play games with friends and family all in the same room, you dont need to stand up and dance around either, it can be very laid back using a controller with only one hand.
I like retro gaming too, the Wii has the best line up of classics legally available (have a look in Edge magazine database if you're unsure) ours probably gets used more for retro gaming at the moment though. It's amazing how many people, mainly ex PS2 and Xbox owners, are trying out old gamecube games too.

In my opinions, the Wii is crap.
Controls are sluggish, the games are poo (the very few of them) and the novelty wears off very very quickly.

No I'm not being a leetboi - but c'mon this is a poor excuse for a console.
Like the 1UP show people call it, it's the console for the "Alpha mom"

The xbox360 did put the fun factor back in gaming for me

back from what though? Microsoft didnt bring anything new with the 360.

There's fun to be had from all the consoles, and you can also get bored with all them. If the Wiimote was sluggish you didnt have it setup properly, if anything it is too sensitive (see the calibration screen)

thats rubbish, how about:

wireless controllers as standard? (pretty much)
a console thats online all the time
an online identity, used for all games and all aspects of the console
playing your own music on any game
xbox live arcade (developed on the original)
Xbox live marketplace
allowing users to stream content from there pc's to the console

and thats just off the top of my head.

A plus side of the Wii is that it probably wont breakdown on you.

I'm put off getting a 360 at the moment due to the amount of threads on here and people I know IRL that have had them go kaput.

Anyone have any idea when it will be safe to buy one lol?

Do you currently play any FPS on PC and do you intend playing them on your new console? If so, I'd say get a Wii because playing FPS with a 360 controller is so ghey compared to a mouse & keyboard combo. The Wiimote isn't as good as keyboard/mouse but it's a damn sight better than playing with a normal console controller... and that goes for anyone saying you should get an XBox to get Halo too.

If you want a no frills console which is a lot of fun, get the Wii.

The 360 is a cracking console too, but it all depends on you and what you want from a console.

That's not really new per se though, is it? More the application of successful PC gaming elements to the console arena. Logical? Yes. Bold? Perhaps. But not innovative.

As for Wireless controllers as standard - that's hardly innovative either, instead more of an incremental progression. Since the Nintendo Wavebird, it was only a matter of time before all the manufacturers adopted them as standard.

As for the OP - go for the 360. Or better still, buy both! ;)

I have both and the 360 is the better choice without a doubt. Wii is one of the most disappointing consoles I've ever owned. 360 isn't perfect but it's the best there is right now.

I've got both and if I could only have one console then it would be the Xbox 360.

Whilst the Wii excels at local multiplayer, it lacks any decent single player experiences past Zelda and Resident Evil 4. Online play is pretty much non-existent and the Nintendo's whole online system is a nightmare. Although there's some good games on the horizon, the numbers are still pretty sparse.

If you can look past the Xbox 360's reliability problems, you have a much more rounded package. It's got a decent library of games and some of the up-coming games are going to be even better (GTA:IV, Bioshock, PES7, etc.). It's more than capable whether you're looking for singe player, local multiplayer or online multiplayer.

In what way? did Nintendo promise something with the hardware that they never implemented? (like Sony did twice)
Is it because the games are slow in coming? (just like all other consoles suffered)
or is it just because of the path Nintendo decided to take with gameplay and graphical style? (that we had plenty of warning about)

Im more dissapointed its taken so long for Microsoft and Nintendo to take on board some of the things Sega were doing 8 years ago :(

You sound on a different planet to be honest, Ok depending on what you mean by hardcore, the Dreamcast had online FPS with keyboard and mouse in high def using VGA 6-7 years ago.
So again what did Microsoft bring that was new with the 360?

Naming one good game on the Wii depends on taste especially as the games I like on the 360 are not usually everyone elses favourites as Im a veteran gamer from the Pong days :D
I have a laugh with my kids playing Cooking Mama, a laugh with the Mrs on Wii play or Wii sports.
Mario Strikers is cool, Resi 4 is far more engrossing than Gears of war IMO, Trauma Center is good, Paper mario is excellent, the controls in Excite Truck were great but I didnt like the game much, even though Im always up for arcade racers, playing Forza 2 with wheel and pedals a lot and I'll say it again the Wiimote in Excite Truck was great.
