Wii Problem with gamecube game

Hi all - decided to fire up a bit of nostalgia by buying super monkey ball for the gamecube...

inserted the game into my wii and I had my classic controller in. The monkey ball loading screen comes up and then I'm forwarded to a screen warning me that because there is no memory card inserted - I won't be able to save my progress - this should then let me play the game without memory card.

This is as far as I can go - the controller freezes and no buttons do anything at all - even the home button. Have tried different controllers etc. Any ideas apart from getting a memory card?

Ahhh ok I assumed the classic controller would work - I assumed it had all of the relevant buttons...

It does have all the relevant buttons ... but its down to the gamecube games.

Gamecube games run natively on the Wii, not by emulation etc, so the original game code only knows to look at the gamecube ports for controllers and memory - the code doesn't know about the likes of the bluetooth controllers or the built in flash memory so the extra additions to the Wii hardware can't be used.

Of course, if they ever went the route of making a way of the Wii being able to patch GC games then it they could be updated to use it the new hardware.

Kinda OT, can you use a gamecube controller instead of a classic one?
Seems a bit silly to end up having to have so many controllers laying around.

and you need a gamecube memory card
You dont need one, they are playable without. Only required for saved games.

Yeah, you can use the GC controllers on the VC.
