I've put off posting this for a while now because I wanted to really give the Wii a chance, I'm a great fan of Nintendo (do not read that as fanboy) and have supported them through the years...however, I feel that they have made a mistake.

I recieved my Wii as a pleasant suprise present this Christmas after being in two minds about the control method myself but hey, a gift :) , I played Wii Sports and of course I was hooked, what a great idea :) I also got Wii Play which was pretty dire but it was all free and Sports was great over the Christmas hols. I also purchased Zelda a favourite franchise of mine since...well a while back. I realise that Zelda is a GC game converted but I have a problem with the controls. If a Wiimote movement is supposed to feel like a sword swipe then that is what I want, it doesn't make a difference which way you swipe the Wiimote, the same action happens. If it's not 1:1 movement, it might as well be a button press this would ultimately be more accurate and less annoying. I've drifted away from Zelda unintentionally and think that this is largely the reason. All reviews I have seen for games I'm interested in state that the controls are "interesting and unconventional by not quite there" I love difficult games as long as you are not struggling against the slightly random control method.

I was looking forward to SSX Blur until I saw a review and some video footage of the controller being used and the fact that it looks largely like a rehash of SSX3.

The New Mario game looks potentially like a new type of game but really doesn't impress me for some reason.

I realise that new consoles always have few games but we are in March now and still have virtually the same games as we did at launch.

So Nintendo are trying to appeal to casual or non gaming gamers? Well done it's worked, the problem now being that these people will not wait around reading previews of Mario or Metroid because they don't care that much. They will walk into a shop and see the same 15 titles then walk out again leaving us gamers with a slightly crappy control method and a bunch of ball rolling bat swiping demos.

Tiger Woods looks promising and that is my only positive at the moment.

I'm sure that I have more to add and many of you will disagree, feel free and discuss.

you could stick with it, but AFAIK the big first party titles part from Super Smash Brothers come out near the end of this year.

But then again you could sell it for a tidy profit.

the way i see it is the control method is new and original and the success of the Wii took a lot of developers by suprise.

It will take time to see the full potential but i believe when we do it will be the best out of the 3 new consoles.

As you said with zelda even tho some of the controls dont follow a 1:1 ratio i dont believe that moving the control up for instance instead of pressing 'X' takes anything away from the game

Maybe not, the spin attack seemed a little random though and the old swiping all the grass becomes tiresome with the constant swiping, combat is less precise because it registers a double swipe if you move the controler back and forth, as is instinctive with a blade swipe. Not major issues just muddied the gameplay a little for me, Nintendo have always had instinctive and natural controls as far as I'm concerned, until now.

I won't be selling it, I don't really need the cash and I'm curious as to how it will develop.

I hope you're right. I have a feeling that we will see plenty of cash ins and rush jobs before that time, this may put people off for good.

and zelda was a gamecube game so the controllers were just extra,

if it had been developed from the ground up purely for the wii maybe the controls would have felt more natural

only time will tell

I think there should be the option to use the GC controller in games where 1:1 movement isn't essential, it can't be hard to add in.

I'm always amazed at the people its drawn into occasional gaming. I'm lodging at the minute with the wifes parents. My wifes mother loves the wii. Always tapping my wife up for a few games on wii sports golf.

She's in her 60's, has never played golf or a console game.

At christmas my wife took it to my sisters and everyone loved the sports games.

My sister will get one, with wii sports and probably never buy another game for it. My mother in law is talking about getting one when we leave too.

For the more in depth gamer, like the people who frequent these boards and spend a few hundred pounds on games each year, I think the wii offers next to nothing. Sports is a great idea but I still didnt feel like my actions where making that much difference. Looking at upcoming games there is not really a lot there. Maybe if you didnt own any other console but if you own either a ps3 or 360 the choice to buy for the wii is really limited.

Other than that its a case of waiting for mario party or another rehash of mario kart.

I've invested quite heavily, for me, in the Wii so far. I've got 8 games, 2 Wiimotes, nunchucks and classic controllers and I've also got 5 Virtual Console games.

I can honestly say that I've never played a console as much as I have the Wii. It gets a solid 2 or 3 hours a day from myself, the missus or her brother on a variety of games. It just hits all the right buttons for me.

I just suppose it depends on what you want - I boot it up to check the weather if we're off out for the day, we all regularly use the Everybody Votes channel. Wario Ware and Excite Truck are on regular rotation and both I feel simply wouldn't be the same without the Wiimote. Excite Truck is just about the best fun I've had on a game for absolutely years, and although I'm aware WW hasn't gone down the best with fans of the series, I rate it the best game, followed closely by the DS version.

I don't think it's any co-incidence I enjoy the Wii so much, as I've never played a handheld as much as I have the DS... which most certainly follows the same philosphy as the Wii.

Another point: I own Need For Speed Carbon and CoD3. They're not the best ports and I'm sure the 360 versions are far more polished... but I don't believe I'd even consider them on the 360, but have thoroughly enjoyed them on the Wii. Horses for courses I spose!

Guys im wanting to buy one of these consoles anyone have info on any retail / online shops that have them in stock?

I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I got a Wii on launch day and have put about 4 hours into it, I'm just not enjoying it at the moment and like you say, I am waiting for the Mario games because, for me, I'd rather buy a game on the PS3 or Xbox360 because as good as the controller is, it is fiddly and very difficult to get it feeling just right. My Wii has now been in my garage for over a month in it's box and if I were to pull out a console to play from said garage it would be between the SNES or N64.

Are you sure thats not down to a lack of other games to buy though? You were basically left to consider it as a purchase BECAUSE there were no other titles to buy?

Whilst I am sure the Wii WILL be a fantastic console the games currently out are just poor. I remember everyone jumping on the Xbox360 for it's launch titles but the Wii, for the most part does appear to be unscathed.

So is it worth getting one ? :/

Personally, I would advise against it unless you really love novelty short lived games. I think gaming newcomers may enjoy things like SSX Blur etc because the control method is "wacky" but fans of the series will simply end up frustrated that the games have become less skill orientated.

It was a brave move by Nintendo, they risk losing all of the accuracy and therefore playability of all their long running franchises in the flick of a wrist!

I can't see anything at the moment or on the horizon that will cement the Wiimote a positive place in gaming history.

I hope something changes my mind, I don't enjoy having such a downer on experimental kit :(

Apart from anything else, my mother in law queued for it on release day and spawned it without a pre-order and my wife payed. A very thoughtful present with a lot of effort put in, I think that is why I'm venting here tbh I can't moan to them.

I wouldn't say so particularly. It wasn't like I'd completed Zelda or my other Wii games prior to getting them, so I didn't need them (and they were gifts...) I've just found them to be refreshingly different on the Wii. From what I've read here, people haven't got into them in a similar way, but I wouldn't have considered them on PC or another console because it's simply one of many... I've found the controls intuitive and immersive, but I appear to be in the minority! :)

With regards to Excite Truck, I'm fairly sure it would be absolutely tosh on a standard pad, but it really is huge fun with the Wiimote.

I dunno, it's hard to put my finger on it, but despite the shortcomings of the various games mentioned, it just sorta falls by the wayside compared to how much I enjoy using the Wii's controls.

Now that's what suprises me about the Wii. I don't find it less skillful, not for a good proportion of the games that I own, as you have to be quite accurate with your movements; not simply able to tap the analogue stick or button which can be easy to be master. SSX Blur according to IGN, for instance, is very skill orientated!

By the looks of zelda on the Wii I'm gunna stay clear of it.
The controls on SSX Blur make me really want to get it.

Games like Super Monkey Ball look like they will be great on the Wii, and looking at the trailer for Bust-a-Move Bash makes me squeel like a little girl.

I suppose it depends on your definition of skill, it could be said that there is a large amount of skill required to actual physically reproduce the exact same movement twice. Several reports have claimed that there is little chance of repeating the same move twice by executing the same wave of the arm giving the moves a hit and miss quality, that type of "skill" would detract from the game in my opinion.
