Wii Woes.

I suppose it depends on your definition of skill, it could be said that there is a large amount of skill required to actual physically reproduce the exact same movement twice. Several reports have claimed that there is little chance of repeating the same move twice by executing the same wave of the arm giving the moves a hit and miss quality, that type of "skill" would detract from the game in my opinion.

There must be a tolerance of the amount you move for certain actions, otherwise I could imagine movement based games to be extremely difficult. However, I would argue that it most certainly does take a fair amount of skill to play a game that relies on tilting the remote when speed is involved, such as in Excite Truck. It might be reasonably simple to play to begin with, but to really succeed it takes a good degree of skill to master.

There's been times when I've been frustrated with not nailing an S grade by 5 points or whatever thinking "I could have done this with an analogue stick!", but then, I could have completed it in a quick run through with a pad - much like a game takes on new life with a light gun, or steering wheel.

I'm not trying to convince you, as you know how you feel - it's just I'm so involved with the Wii right now, even with "average" games, that I can forgive what people might perceive to be tacky controls.

(And if you think about it, true mastery - such as Beckham's freekick/crossing ability has come from being able to control his body/leg/foot to the extent he is/was hugely accurate through practice... as an example.)

I do see what you mean and I haven't played Blur yet, I suppose I have latched onto bits of reviews that confirm my fears and may have overlooked the positives. I guess I won't know until I try it. I'm genuinely glad to hear that people are loving the Wii, if it continues it's momentum and goes against my predictions there may be a game or two released that will give me as much enjoyment as you are obviously getting :)

Metroid perhaps....

I don't think it's fair to compare professional Football to something as important as SSX! :D

LOL. Was just trying to emphasise that you can master movement based control.

Read the SSX Blur review on IGN. They do tend to be fairly accurate from my own experiences; and I'm just glad to see that EA are actually getting something good from the Wii, and we in turn from them.

its the same with all launched consoles there is a lul where no big titles are released. Just have to wait.

Just read a hands on over at IGN for Tiger Woods and apparently the game does not support full swing tracking like Wii Sports and it registers your swing power then takes its shot based on that swing. Again not 1:1 and although it's a preview they claim once again that the control method is about 80% there. I really hope that this is not the case come release time :(

This was 2 days ago and the game is out on the 16 March:

Probably about a year ;)

Total wasted opportunity though, I see the Wii Sports games as a taster of what could be possible on the Wii, Tiger Woods was a real chance to wow people with a full game with all the Wiimote bells and whistles.

This is either incredibly lazy or just plain dumb....or both

Rushed no doubt. I remember reading on here a while ago a few people feared that it would be a normal TW game with a bad tag on for the wii remote. Seems they have sadly been proved correct. A golf game needs to come out designed around the wii remote.

Nintendo should just bring their own out. It would be a massive hit.

To follow suit with a lot of other comments, I got one for my gf after she had wanted one for so long, she will co-op with me on gears of war sometimes (on xbox) but she is not a big gaming fan.

She loves the wii and it is a lot of fun, we have played sports with friends (only one controller but wasn't a big problem passing it round) and it was the most hilarious night i'd had in a long time.

Its not high end graphics but then i don't think it was designed to be! It is fun especially with a few people and drinks. I wouldn't replace my xbox for one but then i can't see my gf swapping her new toy!

Tbh the developers are still seeing what does and doesn't work with regards to movement; for instance Sonic is an amazing game and the controllers are perfect for it. It requires amazing skill and timing and the result really pays off in the end with a silky smooth Sonic game. Which we have all wanted for years...

I do think that we should have the option to use the classic controller or a GC controller. Would prob open the console up to more gamers and increase sales for Nintendo.

Thought I'd try another game on the Wii, Excite Truck, (sorry if you are re-reading this sylph :D ) and it has done nothing to convince me that the controller is a good idea. I've just chalked it up on my list of games that don't work properly with this kind of controller, even at £19.99 it didn't feel like a bargain, I actually think it would play better with a standard controller because the game itself isn't truly terrible (although it got dull for me after about 30mins) It just felt wrong to me. :(

Isn't Excite Truck a Nintendo game? I hope not as you would imagine that they would know what works and what doesn't

Can someone briefly explain how Sonic controls work because I'm interested in experimenting, even if I don't like the results!

HAHA, yes that would help wouldn't it :o

Excite Truck

edited the post above :)

Another factor I have overlooked with Zelda was that me stopping playing coincided with potty training my daughter who repeatedly peed on the floor close to where I sat!..Gonna try again now she's got the hang of it :D

My next question.

We have wireless connectivity out of the box, so when will there be any online multiplayer games? March/April was the original plan. Well....where are they? What multiplayer games are on the radar for this year?

I know Sega are bringing out a game with online play and Mii usage.
I cant remember the name to save my life though!

Hopefully Bust-A-Move Bash! will have online play because it has an 8 player mode.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is meant to have online play too.

I heard that Pokemon Revolution was the first game to use online play, so whenever that's released.

Also, according to some news sites, it was only very recently that Ninty released the online API stuff to developers, so I guess they're still getting to drips with it.

I am reading Sweetie :p

It's a game made with Nintendo by Monster Games. As you know, I think the controls are fine, and I've chalked up a fair few hours. Not perfect, but perfectly workable and more fun than an analogue stick (I think it would be dull if I could use analogue... much easier to correct oversteer/understeer). Maybe they'll do a sequel that'll win you round? ;)

The Sonic controls, as I understand it, are very similar to Excite Truck (eg: hold the pad horizontally.) I'm on the fence about Sonic, as it's had lots of mixed reviews. You'll probably hate it lol :D

Online is coming - April (IIRC) for America with the Pokémon game already mentioned. The Japanese have had Wii online since November (IIRC x2).

I would imagine that to be the first UK online title to coincide with the DS releases of Pokémon.

From then, we'll be playing Super Smash Bros Brawl and Metroid Prime 3 online with any luck, and there's a fair few 3rd parties who have expressed a desire to take their Wii games online. Elebits/Eledees has an online mode and this is already out in America, although purely for map swapping etc (and I'm not even sure this is up and running yet!)

Was half 'n' half about getting Sonic, especially after reading about the controls, but yet again the Wii has proved that it just works.

Only criticism I'll make about the controls is that at times it can be a little too sensitive, especially when you're bombing down a hill and want to stop, it's a bit hard to judge the tilt/stop factor.

But other than that, incredible game and boy is it fast!
