Wilko goes into Administration

No surprise as they stopped being cheaper than the supermarkets many years ago.

Started to think they were a mini john lewis or something... and they don't seem to be doing much better either

Get people say "shops round here are just barbers, nail bars, vape shops and charity shops"

I rather have the units filled with something than left being empty.

The council business rates needs a serious overhaul.

Some countries, their business rates to their local authority is a small % of their takings. So if they had to close due to their county's lockdowns, the authority would have got nothing from the shop. Then come to the month of their main festival, the local authority would receive more money.

I buy nothing, absolutely zilch from Amazon. I expect I am in a minority able to wait a few days to get something delivered or to pick it up locally. Shops would be nice but inevitably priced out by council greed for car parking or an unsatisfactory bus journey.

I don't buy much from amazon.
Get a monthly gift voucher so I use them for this. But often they aren't cheaper.

I will use them if they are cheaper. But I keep adding things to my basket until it gets to free delivery.

They are not as competitive as they used to be.

I think people just have the nostalgia of looking through a catalogue as a kid, you know back before the internet times.

Kids these days have tablets and phones, they don’t need or want a catalogue.
Oh, I dunno, The Smyths catalog dropped through the door yesterday. My kids are all over it. They were circling stuff last night and still doing it at breakfast this morning before school.

Yeah my niece, friends daughter, etc. all love looking through catalogues, they are around 5-6.

Back in Saffrica as a kid, where the postal service was more of a gamble than a certainty, catalogues never existed. Imagine my joy when at 15 years old I moved to Holland and was suddenly slap-bang in the middle of the catalogue craze. Smyths (yes, we had them in Holland too) was probably my highlight as it had all the Tamiya RC cars in it, I used to spend hours and hours browsing it looking at things I'd never be able to afford.

Then I grew up a bit and the best one became Wehkamp, which sold lingerie, and, well... the rest is history.

I honestly do not know why people are really trying to prop up the high street.

Like many have said I have lived near my town for 15 years now and haven't bought anything from there for at least 6 years (I bought a SNES mini from Argos in 2017).

We have many large buildings and shops basically doing nothing. They should be reinvented as social places.

Most of the kids stuff is out of town or on the outskirts.

Bring the Cinema's, Arcades, swimming pools etc all into the town centre and it would become a lovely hub again.
