Will £200 make a difference ?

Hi,my first post here so be gentle with me :)
My current pc I built over 6 years ago and is as follows....
Case - can't remember the name and there's no name on it but it was highly recommended by all the reviews in it's day,has fans front and back and I'm thinking I can re-use this
Power supply - Tagan TG430-U15 430w....again hoping to re-use.
Motherboard - Asus A8N-SLi
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3000
Graphics card - GeForce PCX6600GT
2Gb ram
Windows XP

It's getting a little long in the tooth and I'm hoping a motherboard and processor upgrade will make a big difference.

I've been recommended to go for something along the lines of a Asus P8H61-MX USB m/b,Intel Pentium G630 and 4GB Kingston hyperX ram and ditch the graphics card.

Will this be a big enough jump in performance to be noticeable or should I be going down another route ?
I don't play games and am not into overclocking.

There seems to be so much more choice out there these days and I'm a bit bewildered to be honest :)

Cheers

Hi Welcome to the forums,

1. A picture of your case would be nice so we can determine the airflow of your case and whether you have sufficient cooling space for new tech and what kind of cpu coolers you're able to fit (i don't recommend using stock coolers, usually noisy and whiney but im sure some will disagree.

If you want future proofing i would recommend an i5 3570K and a cheaper matx Z77 motherboard which can be had for just over £200 if you shop around or buy second hand. If you decide you want to game at a later date you could always just add in a graphics card.

Otherwise going for a AMD APU route would suit you better as it provides both gpu and cpu power in one shell, though im not sure how future proof they are at the moment.

You will however want to think about upgrading your ram as well as most systems have a minimum of 4gb ddr3 and since ddr3 can be had so cheaply these days, theres no reason not to buy more lol.

2. Tagan psu's from what i've read in the past and gathered are pretty decent "back in the day" so you should be able to stick with that.

if you're upgrading the board you'll need adapters for your hard drives i think because i dont think they will be using Sata connections and more likey IDE? Someone correct me if im wrong.

Here's my case with the side removed just for the photo

Yeh I'm aware I'll have to get new optical drives as mine are IDE but I have a brand new Sata HD that I never installed.

£200 is about all I really want to spend plus I'm probably going to install Windows 7 and that's going to be another 70 quid or so on top.
I'm definitely in the budget end lol
