Will 850w be enough or do I need bigger?

Looking at adding a full we loop to my sig and then maybe doing another 290... Looking at the outervision psu call it says I'll need a 1200w as it's going to draw 1048w from the wall with my desired overclocks...

Fair enough my CX750M is reaching its max (as with the 5820k overclocked it kept cutting off and restarting but this may of been a Windows issue as it didn't stop straight away after resetting overclocks but did eventually) but surely better efficiency and an 850w would be enough? Or does X99 consume loads of power compared to AM3+...

Spec me some good PSU's that will do, been looking at a 850 G2 but unsure if it will be enough

According to TPU the max power draw of a 290 is around 260 watts at stock clocks, so 2 of them can potentially use up 520watts leaving 330w or so for the rest of the system. I think a clocked 5820k can soak up about 175w so you've only got a headroom of 155w left out of 850w.

If you are clocking the 290 or going to be clocking 2 of them iirc a 290x can take 300watts max at stock and the numbers just get worse from there.

On a single 290 with a 5820k both clocked you're fine with 850w though, prolly at least 300w headroom on that.

With 290x crossfire heavily overclocked and a 4790k also heavily overclocked i used to peak about 800 watts from the wall. So i had a bit to spare with the efficiency taking into consideration im only pulling 720 watts from the PSU at most. Your CPU might pull another 100 watts more than mine but the GPUs probably less as they were running at +150mv.

In short if ya go mad on the overclocks ya might be running on the limit.

Have you thought about just selling the GPU and grabbing a newer one instead of getting a bigger PSU, or are you using a freesync monitor so you feel your better off with the cheap upgrade to keep you going until Vega?

Thanks for the replies and the info, I am not running free sync currently and have looked at a new card but cannot justify the cost of what I would call an upgrade frankly

Fair enough, i would maybe just pay the extra £30 for the 1000w g2 instead then, at least you wouldnt have to hold back on any overclocks then if you find you have a couple of good clocking 290s, you could even try get a few hundred more mhz out of that CPU.

I dunno if buying a new card like a 1080 would cost more or less over a couple of years if ya take into account not having to upgrade your PSU and your system running at half the power draw under load. Im gonna have to keep my power meter connected to the PC for the year and see what it actually costs. I know my electric bill went up by about £100 a year after i went dual 290x but i do use my PC a little too often :)
