Hello all, this may be a specific question but like the topic says will a 4:3 TFT with 100hz ever exist? I dont want a widescreen monitor atm, it's not required on the games I play and it'd make it harder to play them infact, and my PC would never take advantage of it either, so I just wondered, is there any plans for it from any manufacturer at all? Many Thanks :p

All the manufacturers are going widescreen as most people seem to prefer it, so strike one, also people who need a 100hz monitor are a minority.

It just wouldn't be economically viable for someone to produce I'm afraid - or if it was produced you'd be looking at £1200 - £1500.

But what is the process of Hz on a TFT compared to a CRT? of course I know it's different but on a CRT, 100hz is like a MUST, but on a TFT people seem to be content with 75/85hz, and 2/5ms, so what is the process of Hz on a TFT that is so different? because of course it's not really viable buying a CRT anymore haha :p Many Thanks ;D

Current tft's are limited at max 60 fps. which means they really suck for fast action fps.

Viewsonic and Samsung have 120Hz LCD's which will be available in Jan.

The 4:3 Aspect ratio is pretty much dead now for consumer based displays.

lcd dont suck because they are limited to 60fps, its the higher latency that seperates them from crt. Theres virtually no benefit of having more than 60 fps since lcd monitors dont flicker and cause eye fatigue.

You have to use vsync tho to stop tearing!

There is a massive gain from having 120+ fps in high action situations.

We did many tests at university (3D gfx) showing that it makes a huge difference.

The larger your screen and the higher resolution you use, the greater fps is needed to achieve smooth and accurate visuals. It's pure fact.

Some games such as crysis use dirty tricks such as motion blur to cover up the poor frame rates, which does work to a extent, however it's similar to squinting your eyes at a poor quality visual so you cant see it properly thus covering up the flaws.

A high end crt still does a much better job than a high end lcd, the gap is closing, In the new year hopefully the new generation lcd's will bring them closer.

TFTs are bad for gaming a number of reasons... most have much higher input latency than a CRT, obviously 60Hz isn't great for high speed games tho is fine for MMOs and the likes and then theres the residual image - even the best 2ms panels have 2-3 residual images which your brain takes longer to filter than a CRT. If you turn around very quickly in a game like quake 3 then textures, etc. will be blurry for upto 100ms before the image stabalises.

Even with 100 and 120Hz TFTs which are far better for gaming you still get these residual images at a much higher level than any CRT.

Hmmm the only problem with a Widescreen monitor is that i'd then have to put the black bars down the side of the screen, which isnt so bad I guess but i'd just expect a company to make a 4:3 line of Monitors for a lot of players that are so used to it, like, i'm not a pro CS player or anything, but none of them want to exactly go Widescreen haha, but I guess companies go where the money is, which makes perfect sense :p although the 100/120hz ones sound nice as long as the 4:3 aspect ratio on them is good

Also is there any links/info about the 100/120hz Monitors coming out also then please? Many Thanks for the help :D
