Will a GTX 650ti be adequate for my needs?

Hi,

I'm planning on using some of my old system components to build a lounge HTPC/casual gaming machine. Specifically, I plan on playing console-ish (controller friendly) games like Assassins creed, Batman AA, Just Cause etc. I'll be playing the games at 1080p, and I'm not a massive quality whore. If I can play games at a smooth 60 FPS at reasonable settings, I'm happy.

The CPU in the proposed system is an Intel E8400 @ 3.6 GHz, 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, a Corsair builder series 430 Watt PSU and a Vertex 2E SSD.

So, will a GTX 650ti be able to meet my needs, or am I going to have to spend a little more to be confident? My worry with going for a GTX 660 is the power consumption - will a 430 Watt PSU still be OK?

Before you ask, I'm not dead against AMD cards or anything. It's just that I've had lots of AMD cards in the past, and since my last card purchase (560 ti), I've had far fewer driver/performance issues. Therefore I'm tempted to stick with Nvidia for the moment.

Swap your 560 into the Htpc, put a little extra to your proposed 560 purchase and get your main rig an upgrade?

Your 560 will have depreciated considerably in value, could be the perfect excuse to give it an extra lease of life without losing cash on it(as such).

Thanks guys.

I had considered this, and yes, it is a nice excuse for a cheeky upgrade :D However, I generally only play fast paced FPS games on my main PC (CSGO, Tribes etc). In these games, I generally lower settings until I'm getting well over 120 FPS, as I have a 120 Hz monitor. By this time FPS generally seems to become CPU dependant, so I'm not sure a slightly better card would make much difference.

I'll have a think about it :)

PS the card I was envisaging was: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-291-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2392

You'll get higher settings though.

If it was myself, my logic works by the amount my current gpu's worth and buying a slower more expensive product for another slower system is an unnecessary backwards step.:)

MM can get you a far faster card for less money too if your willing to go second hand.

If it simply must be a new gpu for the build, dare I say without the Gods striking me down:
