Now to start the post off i have to say my diet really is horrendous, i'm unbelievably picky and basically do not like fruit and veg, there are a couple of exceptions but i find it really hard to learn to like them, in other words i have to make do as much as i can with whatever else i eat.

Now i am not fat by any means, just over six foot and weigh about thirteen stone, i would however really like to turn that into 12st and some muscle, or whatever weight really, i'm not happy with the way i look at the moment.

As for the routine itself, i find going to the gym a little boring - and would not make use of the subscription, so i was considering taking up swimming three times a week, and using the cross trainer / weights the family currently own on the other days.

Based on hour long sessions of swimming and say 20/30minute sessions on the other things - am i likely to see any form of realistic improvement?

I'm really unfit and need to sort it out!

I would say that yes you will see some improvement, if not pyshically your cardio vascular fitness will improve. You should loose a little weight but this really does depend on your diet.

Diet is ESSENTIAL. If your not giving your body what it needs to repair and grow your really shooting yourself in the foot. What kind of things are you eating? be honnest.

I'm sure someone will be along and suggest a 3 day weights split for you:)

you will see an improvement, but, im guessing that muscle gain will be minimal.
what weights do the family have?

Here goes with the technical terms! We have two dumb-bell type things, with plenty of weights sized for them, from about five to about twenty five probably!

And a bar for erm, bench press? Which there are weights for that i almost have trouble lifting, but obviously lots of smaller weights for that too! So quite a good selection really, is that the way to go?

for some people yes
for some people no

you are in the NO category :p

you have no idea what you are talking about, which makes me think knowing about how to use the weights properly.... you wont know.
Get to a gym, if only for a few pay as you go sessions and see one of the general gym staff. they will be able to show you how to do most things.

once you have form correct, yes, doing it from home shouldnt be a problem :]
