Will be/o2 be able to be faster than Sky on the same line

I can only get 512 on my phone line with Sky. Pathetic when you consider I'm in a built up area. Be/o2 say they plan to be able to offer on my exchange in the next month. Will their service be any faster or am I just hoping?
Virgin is looking nicer now
 
Depends which Sky service you're connected to, but if the best your modem connects at is 512kbps you're unlikely to gain much.
 
Post your line stats. It might be that Sky have incorrect data on your phone line length and so are unwilling to give you any faster a speed despite your line being able to support it.

...but sadly it's much more likely that what Tolien has said is the case.
 
I'm on Virgin cable at the moment. I only just got my BT line reconnected because Virgin wanted to start charging me after 3 yrs of free cable.

This is off the sky website:
Testing your line shows it should support broadband speeds of up to 512 Kb
 
Unfortunately that info from sky isn't really any use :/ Especially if your line has only just been reconnected. It's happened to a lot of people I know where the speeds they're offered are below what the line will support.

Input your details into www.samknows.com and see what it says your distance from the exchange is.

It's by no means a definite answer but it can suggest a conclusion.

Found a mapping thing on that link and that says about 3.5 meg, which will do me nicely. Anything over about 2 meg should do so I'll give it a go. When I saw 512 I nearly rang up virgin with my tail between my legs asking for forgiveness :eek:
 
What did it say your straight line distance was?

I'd just make sure you get an adsl provider that doesn't tie you into a 1 year contract. At least that way if it's awful you could go back to VM relatively quickly.
 
Cable kicks ass out of ADSL, i am on BE* here and get good speeds, i download about 1meg a second. But i only have it because cable isnt on this new estate.

So virgin actually want u to pay for ** service? imagine that :P You have to pay for adsl too, so stick to cable =]

Cable doesn't kick ADSL's ass by any means. It really depends on personal circumstances - area, proximity of the exchange, availability of LLU, line quality, etc. The best ADSL is better than the best Cable but the worst cable is better than the worst ADSL.
 
cable is obviously better technically. However, in the Uk the cable company is unspeakably managed. Therefore in theUk there is an excellent chance that Adsl can be cheaper and more reliable/better example Be/o2
 
That's not always 100% accurate, AbsenceJam. Easynet/Sky/UK Online won't radically change your interleave depth or delay whereas Be/O2 will happily put you on "fastpath" (ID 4) if you request it. Although not really relevant to the OP's post due to distance, on a good line moving to fastpath on ADSL2+ could give you a faster line with Be than with Easynet. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong :D

you keep posting that explain? I was tempted to switch from virgin but I get rubbish speeds where I live and to be honest I would rather not give an isp money(fair enough) and then throw money at BT
