I guess this is the sort of thing you end up with when you have a group/community of people who live outside the laws that apply to the rest of society...

Aside from dodging tax, ignoring planning laws, pulling girls out of school at about 13-ish... and generally increasing the crime rate in whatever areas they decide to pich up camp in it seems that some ****** also tend to ignore basic employment laws/minimum wage to the point where vulnerable people have been held as slaves..

The above isn't an isolated incident.

Yet local authorities are supposed to provide spaces for these people to camp etc... I don't see why traveler culture should be protected, if anything we should be encouraging it to die out. Sure if someone wants to live in a caravan, pay their taxes, not break planning laws, ensure their kids get sent to school until 16 and not trespass on people's land then fair enough but it seems plenty are happy to ignore certain parts of our legal system.

I live just down the road from there. Was more police than I have ever seen around this morning.

Tht site has been a police 'no go' area since I was a lad. Truly horrible.

It's tricky to cope with these people. You either kick them out of their 'permanent' site and they'll just find somewhere else to cause trouble. Or, you let them have that site so they don't cause trouble elsewhere, and they'll wreak havoc there.

"That's the worse case. Some are treated a little bit better, but they were told they could not leave and if they did they would be beaten up and attacked.

"But in fact some people did leave and told us what was going on and when we looked back since 2008 we were aware of 28 people who had made similar accusations."

It took 28 reports before they took action!?

Bedfordshire police anrt the most active of police services... (I hear the cars go out most days with the blues and twos but have only seem them active in town once in the last few months of living back in Bedford)

Yes 28 reports over a three year period, thats not going to look good in the newspapers tomorrow.
As said elsewhere, time the traveller sites are subject to regular enforcement raids.

"He added that the men appeared to have been "recruited" from soup kitchens and benefits offices and included people with problems such as alcoholism"

This reminded me of something. About twelve years ago, (when I was 21) I had just finished work labouring on a building site. Was enjoying a nice cold beverage after getting dropped off, sitting outside in the pub garden.

A van full of gypsies turns up, a couple of them got out and he asked me how much I earnt. I told him and he offered me more to come and live with him and his wife, saying she would do all my cooking and cleaning, free booze and I wouldn't have to pay rent.

Naturally I declined, very suspicious. He gave me his phone number and left.

Later that evening, alone - I actually considered it for about 5 minutes as my life wasn't really going anywhere at that time and the prospect of free things was appealing. I gave myself a slap, glad I did, I could have ended up living in a dog kennel.

problem is they targeted vagrant types etc.. so the witnesses aren't too credible also anything to do with travelers is potentially very controversial so the police, I'd presume, are generally more reluctant to get involved with traveler issues.

Still 28 people over 3 years is a bit ridicules - something should have happened sooner...

No sorry, didn't even read the links. Just referring to all those divs who have gone down to the camp to "support" the ****** and rabble on about how this is a breach of their human rights etc.

Just reinforces my long-held view that ******/gyppos are nothing more than vermin

Nothing more?

I suspect they would be more than vermin, stealing people "keeping them for up to 15 years"?! WHATTT!

Imagine, taking a gypo (of similar mind to the ones in the OP), sticking him in your shed for 15 years, imagine how he'd feel, no hope of being returned home.

Ye, exactly.

******* scum.

Oh, there's plenty of other words I could use, don't you worry about that ... although those words are not acceptable on a family forum.

I think vermin is quite appropriate - they infest an area and breed at an exponential rate. Normally, if you're infested with vermin, you exterminate it - sadly not in this country.

I ***** hate ******, I grew up in a ***** rob zone, we got burgled several times and our lab got hit with a shooting stick / seat, I lived in Sussex / surrey border in a £700k house so not a rough area just with lingfield camp down the road if you lived not in a estate you'd be constantly probed by ****** day and night.

Grrrrrrr ****** ******

Its a backwards way of life. If you live in this country, you abide by the law like everyone else.

Nobody is above the law.
Except celebrities who can afford top lawyers and their own weight in class A, obviously.

The problem with travellers is that no matter how many times you kick them out, they only find some other site to annoy.

Frankly just let them stay where they are and patrol it more.
