will blu ray take off?

This is the question....

Beta Max Vs VHS.....

Personally i think HD-DVD will take the crown, but who knows till it happens.

We'll have to wait and see, I think for the first year or so we'll see a pretty even share in the market between BD and HDDVD. There's the chance neither will take off hugely for a good while, but the PS3 will no doubt sell in huge numbers, so a lot of people will automatically pick BD due to having it built into their PS3.

A few months ago, HD-DVD was the better format for overall picture quality, but neither format were using the VC1 codec at the time, so once BD gets using that, we may see a lot better quality on BD side.

At the end of the day though, we can't predict the future accurately, but Betamax was the superior quality back in the VHS war, but VHS still won it.

Sony media formats

Beta Max > Mini Disc > SuperAudio CD > UMD

Can you see a pattern?

But saying that, Blue-Ray is 3x more powerful than HD-DVD :D

With Microsoft just announcing their movie/TV download service for the 360, which supports HD content, I really think this be starting to become BD Vs HD-DVD Vs digital distribution. Personally I think digital distribution will take over before either of the new disc formats can establish themselves as a replacement to DVDs. I really don’t think the quality offered is going to be enough to warrant the higher prices of the new formats for a good few years which should give digital distribution enough time to establish itself.
I think there will always ben a market for buying/renting discs but I don’t think either format will ever reach the heights of DVD.

i can see it failing to be honest for that reason every format sony decided to make new thing has failed plus everybody only just upgraded to dvd so hd-dvd would be obvious step up plus a lot more ppl are using harddrives to store there films on .

Forgot the floppy disk and a part share in CD and DVD ;)

Minidisk was a success at the time. MP3 players came along and pushed them out the way.

I think bluray will win for 2 reasons. The PS3 and it has a cooler name ;)

If that is really the question then the answer should be whichever format has the most porn produced for it.

(for those that dont know the porn industry is largely considered responsible for the success of VHS over the supposedly superior betaMAX as most adult film production companies chose to use VHS)

I'm praying that that was sarcasm :p

Nobody knows who'll win the format war, or even if there will be a winner. I'm predicting dual-format stale-mate meself.

But at the moment, all I know is, the HD-DVD players are cheaper, the films on the whole are better quality (visually and audio wise) and there's a good selection of films being released that I want to see.

The problems with Blu-Ray for me at the moment are:

1) Players far to expensive
2) Rubbish MPEG2 encoding for most discs (this is changing though)
3) Films are being targetted at the dreaded 16-35 year olds. So plenty of Xmen 5, Rom Coms, crappy horror films. I prefer to see older films brought up to date visual wise. And currently HD-DVD takes the crown for that.

I don't think the PS3 will shift things that much. After all, something like 80% of PS2 owners use the bog-standard composite cable to connect to their TV (rather than RGB or component). So 80% don't care about picture quality anyway. Of PS3 owners, within the first year, I can imagine in the UK only 25% odd using an HDMI connection to an HDTV. And of those people, most will want to play games rather than buy Blu-Ray films.

Not sure but i think HD DVD will win in the end the name "Blue Ray" sounds strange to the mass market

Look at high street stores you have "Sky HD" "HD Ready TVs" and so on so it makes sense that the mass market will go for a "HD DVD player" to go will all this new "HD" stuff

Sky Blue Ray? Blue Ray ready TV ? doesnt really have the same ring to it

Sure people like us in the know dont care but a lot of familys who dont know the difference will take the safer sounding option

I also think that this war will take ages to end because we will get players that will play both formats anyway the price of the disks will be the decider and i think the HD DVD is cheaper to make

one of the more intresting aspects of the next gen consoles is the blueray and HD DVD saga

honestly, i dont think either of them will really kick off for 2 years, till joe public adapts it

though when i talk to my mates, they have heard of blueray, "its the the new ps3!!!"

They have had more failed formats than I have had hot dinners.

But I suspect that the rewards for having a sucessful format completly negates the investment in the failed formats. Which is why Sony keep trying to come up with the next great format.
