WIll CPU TDP matter for my mini-ITX build?

I'm putting together a new gen Ryzen build in a Lian-Li TU150 and just torn on what CPU to go for. The cooler will be Dark Rock Pro 4 with rear case exhaust (if it fits) and front/bottom intake. GPU will be a new AMD one as well when they are available if that makes a difference. My heart wants a 5950x but my head is saying perhaps the 5600x with the lower TDP is the right call in this case?

I'm running a 3700X in the TU150 with 2070S, it's hottest when the GPU is also running but still manageable. The bottom fans as intake helped a lot. I also considered modding the top and moving one fan to the top for exhaust.

Also I saw someone mod a hug fan into the front. I think a 140mm would be easy to do but not sure how much difference it would make.

I'm hoping that my system can cope with a 5800X/5900X.

I'm running the D15 so performance should be similar to the DR Pro 4.

The only ITX board that will handle a 16 core under heavier loads without the VRM getting crazy hot is the Strix 570i (but it doesnt have bios flashback so you may not be able to post with a 5000 series if you dont have an older cpu to flash it with). Maybe the MSI B550i gaming edge, but there's a "Max" version of that just been released for the same price thats not hit shelves yet so that may put you off buying it. If you have solid top down airflow over the VRMs then you could get away with a Gigabyte X570i or B550i as long as you don't try any stress testing with extended cpu power limits (but the Gigabyte bioses suck if you care about that kind of thing).

If your case can fit a DTX board then the Crosshair 8 Impact's only flaw seems to be its price... (£50 off with an asus promotion at the moment)

Source - I own a Gigabyte X570i with a 3900XT and the VRM hits 85c after a long gaming session at stock and goes over 100c in Prime95 in a sharkoon QB-One case. Adding a 3x40mm corsair dominator memory cooler to the VRM heatsink and it now stays below 70c even when heavily overclocked. In a large open case (Thermaltake X1) the VRM ran 12c cooler both with and without fans. I am replacing this board with a Crosshair 8 Impact I picked up last week (assuming I can bag a 5950x today anyway), I would consider a 12 core the max these 6 phase boards can handle.

If you drop down to a 5800x or 5900x you will have no VRM heat issues with any of the above mentioned boards.

Hope that's helpful :)

The graphics card will probably be the biggest offender. If you can find a blower style HSF upto 250watts is usually doable.

Thanks for this! I have bought the DTX impact but had no idea about the promotion.

Thanks for all of the replies, feeling a lot more confident about going with the 5950x/5900x. Just have to try and get my hands on one now :D

You're welcome :). Do be aware though that Asus take a while to pay out, and make sure you fill in everything correctly. Its more important to do it right than get it done fast as they simply dont pay and its tough luck if you mess something up...

Regards the CPU I'm in exactly the same boat...sat in a pre-order queue with an expected delivery date of the end of November. Much thumb twiddling and sideways glancing at expensive new hardware gathering dust, bad time to splash on new toys especially when they look to be so good compared to outgoing parts. Good luck dude!
