Hi all,

Recently my mobo broke so I've now got a new one which is a different make.

Question is, If I just replace the mobo and connect everything back up will it all work fine? Or does the hard drive have to be completely formatted? If so how would I go about getting all my files off? Could I plug it into another pc and make a back up?

Many thanks

It depends on how different the new mobo is compared to the old one. The drive itself will work fine but it's Windows which will cause any problems if the chipset on the new board is incompatible with the drivers contained in the Windows install on the board.

If Windows fails to boot on the new board then you'll be able to put the drive into another machine and copy the data across - you may need to tweak some of the file ownerships etc but nothing major.
