There's one lad on this forum that regularly (it seems) admits to breaking the fingers of his cousin - Yet the posts remain, quotes of it remain, when he should, in fact, be reported for assault and casing bodily harm.

Back to the OP / topic in general - Did they not try writing at all (letters, that is. With pen & paper)?

If he didnt report it then there is no crime? And since when do I regularly admit it? Please explain how once is regular?

It's criminal assault, whether he reports it or not, and you can be charged for it.

Who knows - he may be too scared to report it, just in case some violent psycopath decides to teach him a lesson for squealing.

You've mentioned it twice in a week (here and here) - hence my statement that it seems you crow about it regularly.

If this is the case your looking at a few months until its returned, it wont be looked at by a foresenic department just a computer crime department within the police force, and they arent that technical, they will just have a quick look at the contents of the drive and use some standard recovery software to see whats been deleted.

Actually some forces are VERY technical. And the software is anything but standard.

Is it possible that the OP's wife's "auction site" account has been hijacked and there have been several fraudulent sales? I can't see why the police would get involved for a single sale, particularly as it's feasible the accuser is pulling a fast one. But if there have been several then that could exaplain it.

Why dont they just supervise a complete reformat or something?
When you format a hard drive, the information on that drive is not deleted, it's just marked so that data can be overwritten, this is why data recovery can be very easy, hence why a supervised format would be useless.

Indeed, this is possible, my account got hacked into last month, luckily, Ebay noticed this before i did and deleted all the listings that the ofender had listed.

I too think there may be more to this story than meets the eye, it just isn't feasible IMO

FFS it wouldnt cost him twice as much! Does nobody read ANYTHING???? IF the police damage it, the police are OBLIGED to pay the damages. It wont cost him ANYTHING to replace any damage.

In theory you'r right, but in practice do you think it would be that simple to get compensation for any damage the plod may have done. I doubt it. Unless they have actually thrown his pc out of a window and stamped on it with their size 12's, I would say he had sweet FA chance of getting compensation. It would be exactly the same if I went up to your car and put a brick through your windscreen, providing their were no witnesses, I could just say it was like that when I passed. And there would be nothing you could do about it (legally anyway, I'm sure you could slap me round the head with a cricket bat though).

Anyway, this is jumping the gun. I suspect it will be returned working, maybe a bit grubby and untidy, but thats all.

Pah, real men open a trap door into the pits of hell and burn their hard drives to all damnation.

Apparently it's still possible to get the files back though.

No, real men dip the drives in mustard. The hair blocks the motor and stops the layers being read.

This whole thing smells BS

unless you are a complete retard, why on earth would you send a pc and a TFT parcel post with no insurance/tracking, however expensive postage cost is? But it was sold on eBay right? so the buyer pays the postage cost anyway? errrr riteeeeee

A parcel that large will command a fairly big premium should he send it with 'signed for, with insurance'. So he might save about £10-£20 by sending it bog standard post.

Also, in ebay, the postage costs are not necessarily paid by the buyer. There is a fee that comes under postage, however, its an all inclusive fee (postage and highest bid) that is paid as a single payment. Dont buy into the postage fees that are often listed on there as these are not strictly true. Eg. sometimes you might have an item that is worth £20, that would cost £2 to post; but its buy-it-now price is listed as £2, while the postage is £20 - this technique would allow the seller to reduce his commission fees payable to ebay.

What I find stange is that the police have so easily become involved. In most cases, the police are extremely laid back about these things and would normally tell the person to file a claim via the small claims court.

I got ripped off 2 years ago for a TFT monitor for £380 and the police couldn't give a ****. Car windows have been smashed, my garage has been broken into with lawnmower and bikes stolen and the police don't even come round.

Last time my car window got smashed in they asked me to take it to the police station between 8:30 and 10am. So I'm supposed to drive my car with a smashed window and take time off work for them to dust for fingerprints?

That's why I think it's a wind up.
