Just seen this is £14.99 on Steam (GOTY Edition), i am very tempted at that price even though i have a feeling the game might "not be for me", see i have never played anything other than FPS shooters and driving/ racing games (RPG & RTS is not really how i want to waste hours), i really enjoyed HL2, didn't get into EP1 as much as i hoped and hardly touched EP2, so your advice please, is this mongrel of a game enough to keep a "shooter" happy/ entertained?

It's not really an RPG, more an open world shooter and a fantastic one at that. The world is so engrossing and there's plenty to see and do so I would definitely recommend this game to anyone.

I didn't really understand how to play it and where to go and what to do without the aid of the internet, but once you get the hang of it its quite good fun. Can get a little boring at times though.

IMHO it's more RPG than FPS.

No its not. With mods you an enhance the RPG side but vanilla is very FPS. You end up a master of everything by lvl30 rather than having to specialise.

And VATS is great fun if you want FPS or not. It never gets old watching a slow-mo bullet take an enemies head off.

I've wondered the same as OP.

I only played it for an hour or so at a friends house and we never got to any action... just talking (i.e. You're at a party, will you tell the child happy birthday, not say anything at all or return with a gift).

Does the action ramp up later on or is there a small piece of action between these scene setting portions?

If you prefer multiplayer then no single player game is ever going to be good enough.
This is what I find for me, I'd find even pong against another human more fun than any single player game.

Fallout 3 is an excellent game, for the right tastes. However, given the OP I would personally say that no, no you won't like it. I think you will feel there isn't enough action and shooting in it and that there is too much talking, wandering and exploring for your tastes.

Hated Oblivion, loved Fallout 3. Its a really good game if you get into the story and are willing to put in the hours and explore.

I completed it pretty quickly and didn't even see half of the map. Will play through it again on the 360 this time.

As said, as a "shooter" its a bit weird. It is an FPS as such, but its designed for VATS, so most of the time you won't be shooting yourself, just marking and watching the computer shoot for you.

i found exactly the same thing

got out of the bunker and started wondering around for a bit and found it very dull

Did you try any missions?

I loved the game and really enjoyed the last few parts with the giant robot

I bought it yesturday about 2pm, played for about 5hours and was almost done. quite short tbh

Short?!? Of course it will be short if you just sprint through the main storyline.

Im 32 hours in so far and havent even touched that storyline yet, or barely covered most the world. Its huge.

I get side tracked a lot, i'll be on a quest going somewhere and i'll be like ooooh i havent been in there before and off i go exploring..

Bethedsa games like Fallout and Oblivion are all about the side-quests. The main quests are always very short, the intention is to explore the world.
