hi all,
was in shop today with my brother he was going to buy new fone and with the deal they giving away laptop 7/8" jobby but had linux ubuntu on it, which hes cool with, he dont mind going to linux as long as it can do 2 main things

1: will it run microsoft autoroute or is there an equivalent as he does europian deliveries?
2: will it run nokia data suite so to connect thro mobile fone for internet while abroad?

thanks ali

There's a fair chance the first one will run in WINE, it doesn't seem too complex.

The second one seems more complicated since it adds a network adapter. You might want to ask at the Ubuntu forums if anybody's used Ubuntu with said Nokia phone.

cool will have a look there,
on the upside ive just installed ubuntu live cd on my laptop and damn ive never seen my lappy run so fast !!!! im liking this :D

well the whole idea is to install now, so i can try some of the programs and give answer to my brother, thing is HOW ?
just started going thro install and it then asked what partition, it wanted to put on the whole disk and wipe XP but i just want small partition for ubuntu

Let me be sure I've got you right. You want to wipe out XP and overwrite its partition. You then want to create new ones, one of which is smallish and will contain Ubuntu for the time being.

Right?

If you want to do anything so complex you should choose manual partitioning so that you can get everything to the sizes you want. You'll need about 4 GiB for Ubuntu (leaving plenty for programs you install). You'll want about a gig, maybe more, as a swap partition. Everything else can be carved up as you wish.

i want to keep XP and install alongside it, im just partitioning my hdd now with acronis and gonna put abut 5gb ish for ubuntu
i have my XP on seperate partition anyway so im only plasying with the data partition i have which is empty anyway !!
hopefully i can then see in ubuntu setup the 3 partitions.
only one thing im not sure about is what type of file system?

Ubuntu is a little tricky to install and install new software drivers, there are forums and guides so it's not impossible. Managed to install Ubuntu on brothers laptop, plus install slimcenter, and remove old kernals. Then sort out multi boot/default boot options (use startup manager) you have to install that also.

I'd use Linux, if you don't need a OS for gaming.

ok its installed and im using it now, seems ok just need to figure out linux
i dont really use laptop for much else than browsing and chat, got desktop for gaming etc

You're right, you don't need to screw around for 5 hours installing extra software to make it work! :p

let us know what's up now that you've got it running.

So true, this is why I love it so much, takes 30mins to install and you got a complete working system, office installed and all the media stuff if you use mint (like i just have :D)

everythings ok, just need to get used to it!!
still not sure about making final jump away from XP so will dual boot for the moment.
away this weekend so not had chance to try the programs i originally posted but will when i get home.
my brain was hurting as i need to figure out which partition i needed to use, as it happens i made partition with acronis but ubuntu made its own partitions and i had to merge back the ones i made.
thanks for the help guys
will keep you posted if the programs work

There are some autoroute alternatives, heres just one: http://www.gpsdrive.de/index.shtml
And its probably possible to use nokia phone on the internet, i cant say how without knowing more about the phone.
Quick search in synaptic package manager turns up gnokii and other apps.

as it happens my brother phoned the customer service and said to them about the laptop having linux and the guy on the phone said what a crock of ****! so hes gone and bought online from same company and got same laptop with XP so hes sorted!!

as for me im liking ubuntu very much, not used my xp much recently !

thanks again ali
