im about to transfer a 5.5gb .rar file over my network from pc to laptop, containing all my music and documents

the only way i can do it is using msn as im on ubuntu on laptop and dont have a clue how to transfer files.

im on a 100mbit lan but they only transfer at 300kb/s :S

msn should be allright so long as it can make a direct connection.

Otherwise SCP should do the job nicely, ubuntu is pretty hopeless (imo) so probably doesn't have ssh set up out of the box, simple to set up though + winSCP on the windows side.

In fact, i'm fairly sure ubuntu should be able to access windows shares easily from the gnome menu, then just drag and drop it.

Either way moving a 5.5gb file over network isn't the best plan, i'd split it up.

Split it with WinRAR and burn onto 2x15p DVDs or use a couple of DVD-+RW's!
That way it will be quicker and you will also be backing it up at the same time ;)

Setting up a share on Ubuntu is pretty easy as even I can do it. These instructions are from Cob and are for Folding @home but will work for any folder.

"Or you can access your stats from within Windows by downloading and unpacking the FahMon.zip package, and then going into Ubuntu and right-clicking the foldingathome folder and selecting 'Share folder'. Then select 'Share through Windows Networks (SMB)' and download the necessary files.

After that's finished, open a terminal and type

sudo smbpasswd -a "your username"

Enter your Ubuntu password 3 times, shut down Ubuntu and restart Windows.

Once that's done and you've restarted Ubuntu, you should be able to access your foldingathome folder through Windows FahMon. It can take a good few seconds for FahMon to find the foldingathome folder, but it will do."
