Will my GPU cope with 3440x1440?

As per my sig I have an AIO 1070ti which is a great performing card at 1080p for high hz gaming, however I've just bought a 144hz ultrawide.

I'm not expecting to be able to keep the same settings for games I run now and know that I'll have to reduce settings and still won't hit 144hz. I do however want games to be playable as my wife will be using my 144hz IPS screen while we're confined to the home.

So... question is, should I be looking to buy a new GPU, or will this tie me over til the new cards arrive? If not, then what should I be looking at? (Screen is freesync, but would be looking at nvidia cards)

If you lower the settings it should do OK, depending on the games you play. But at 3440x1440 I’d expect you will need a faster card especially if you want to keep over 100hz. But that’s down to what settings/framerates you’re comfortable with.

you’re talking 30% extra performance over 1440p to achieve the same frames. 3440x1440 100hz requires about the same power as 4k@60hz.

If anything test with the monitor, see how it performs and go from there. Next gen shouldn’t be long so I’d try stick it out if you can.

This is my dilemma, I'm used to playing pube-g locked at 144fps, as that my main go to action game. Games like civ 6 and anno 1800 I'm fine at 60fps, but anything fast paced 60fps to me feels like a slide show!

Looks like I'll be turning settings right down, but the higher res I guess will counter some of that.

Waiting feels like the sensible option, however if it's too drastic a performance hit, would something like a 2070s cope? (I'm just loathed to spend 500 on a stop gap card... but will if I have to)

I think it is definitely best to wait and see. If the performance isn't good enough, try lower settings - you mightn't notice any difference.

Knowing PUBG's lack of optimisation performance might improve :D

I went from a 1080 to a 2070S at the same res as you and it’s worked really well. Apex Legends would struggle to hit even 100FPS, normally running at around 50-75 now sits pegged at 100FPS. Division 2 (which, imo, isn’t as well optimised as D1 or many other games) would struggle to hit 60FPS now hits 60-80. It’s a good value upgrade.

Thanks MissChief, my GPU tends to perform like a top end 1080, so dropping settings should do the job for now!

During these times we going through I would only be thinking about buying a new GPU if you have a fair amount of savings
(say enough savings to cover at lest 3 months of bills, food, rent or mortgage) plus enough on top of them savings for the new GPU

It wasn't a question of finances or affordability, otherwise I wouldn't have bought a 3440x1440 gaming monitor lol.

My EVGA 2070s runs well on AAA+ titles. Someone correct me if im wrong here, but, my 3840x1080 resolution pushes around 5% more pixels than a standard 1440p monitor? And I get easy 60-70 on high / v. high detail on demanding games like, Division 2 etc..

You will be fine until the new cards come out, you will just have to tinker with some graphical settings to get the best performance.

Lol, no chance, I cannot justify spending that much for old tech. If this 1070ti can struggle through to next gen then I'll be picking up a 3080ti or whatever it will be :D
Guessing the best thing to do is try your most played games with the 1070ti on the new 3440x1440 monitor to see what FPS you get and then work from there

3840x1080 resolution = 4,147200 pixels
3440x1440 resolution = 4,953600 pixels

Plus a 2070s is a hell lot faster then a 1070ti

Yeah think this will boil down to acceptable fps (which is around 100fps for me personally) and whether I can get pube-g running that without looking complete dog toffee...

The 1070ti was a great card when I got it, but it's not aged too well with dx12 addams Vulcan titles sadly. Rdr2 I've not played for ages, but I'll not even bother with that as I only managed 86fps average with thre HW unboxed settings at 1080p!

As someone else said, your 2070s murders the performance of a 1070ti, you're probably twice as fast lol

What ever FPS you were getting in games at 1920x1080 you should get around half that amount at 3440x1440

I guess that 86fps at 1920x1080 will equal around 45fps at 3440x1440 (But then this may not be the case as you may of been cpu limited at only 1080p)
