Will my plasma do HD with 360?

I know I can't get SkyHD through my plasma, as the refresh rate is 60Hz instead of the UK 50Hz. But would an XBox 360 give me High Definition when connected by component leads?

Here's a couple of pics from the manual, with the HD resolutions circled:

Thanks

The 360 does have a 60hz option so it "should" give you high def.
I never thought about the refresh rate on my TV so can't tell you if it makes a difference.

Any plasma will 'sacle' an input resolution, and thats what that chart is saying, what resolutions its 'compatible' with.

Can you let us know which Make and model of plasma you have? This way we can definitely say what it the 'native' resolution is, as thats all that really matters.

Saying that though, I have a non-HD 42" plasma, and that looks brilliant being fed the component signal from my 360. I have a smaller 26" plasma that is HD ready, and to be honest I prefer having the better colours and larger screen size, than the smaller, higher resolution screen.

It's a 42" Maxent MX-42LE7 I got from somewhere a year ago. Basically a cheap budget model, but it's done the job.

aint u posted this on AV as well?
Yeah... I've been caught :P I just wanted a few different opinions.

I thought the xbox should do it fine, then I started wondering if running at a different refresh rate would affect the speed of the games.

Here's a thread which says that the xbox360 plays dvds badly when set to 60Hz. Although I already have a dvd player, so as long as games play ok at 60Hz then that's fine :)

A higher refresh rate simply allows for a higher framerate from 50fps to 60fps. Unlikely that the games will be running that fast anyway though so it wont make a noticable difference if any.

It does indeed.
No it doesn't. You're probably thinking of the 'good old days' where our UK consoles ran slower versions of some games due to the sloppy converstion from the US (or Jap) original.
Changing the refresh rate won't affect anything.

Your Plasma will no doubt be a standard-definition model, but it will be perfectly fine if its got a component input at the back..Just get your 360, plug it in and enjoy, don't worry!

What you mean more frames per second .....

Indeed :)

(I'm not sure if there's some irony or sarcasm lurking in your post that or if it's a serious question :p)

Energize, you're right and the difference between 25 and 30fps, and 50 and 60fps, is hard to see I agree. I think it's probably more noticeable going from 25 to 30 actually. People running '30fps' games in PAL50 mode are getting just 25fps. I don't think too many people realise that.

Yeah it does - unless something about the 360 is different to previous consoles. A number of games will not let 50Hz players play against 60Hz players online for example.

IIRC with the original Xbox you could play in either 50 or 60hz and it didn't affect anything. Except 60hz looked smoother of course. Whereas with other consoles the refresh rate was used as a timing device, the Xbox didn't use it like that so changing the refresh rate didn't affect the actual speed of gameplay.

That isn't true, I can tell you for a fact :) Xbox games are vsynced and the refresh rate does make a difference to the framerate.

With hd though you arent limited to 30fps because the frames aren't interlaced. Running at 50hz will allow you to have 50fps.
