S939 AMD X2 upgrade discussion *renamed*

Basically, I have a A64 4000+ atm.

I want to go dual core, and want something I'm not going to lose performance from, so basically the 4400, 4600 and 4800 are options. Not sure if a 4400 would out perform a A64 4000+?

So been looking around and basically seems like all the S939s have disappeared of the face of the planet? Whats the deal with this am I doomed? :(

As far as I know they aren't being produced any more so OCUK won't be getting any in.

You're best bet would be a 2nd hand x2 off of ebay or a new core 2 duo rig from OCUK.

Core2 ain't an option really as I wanna stick with my Shuttle/don't have the cash for a new setup really.

So whats the performance of a 4400 X2 compared with a 4000+ A64?

Well I went from a Opteron 146 to an X2. It's a nice step up if you can find one for a good price. Seeing as dual core is the way forward an x2 will probably last you out until whatever the next must have clocker is.

Only paid pennies too. :)
Lol, you must've been lucky then judging by the bids on the ones that are on there for sale now. Either that or you're talking rubbish.

I beat you all, got mine for £60. Mates rates.

what chip and whats it clocked at?

I also hear x2 3800s actually have 2x1mb cache like the 4600s but it is disabled. Is it possible to enable it?

Those are probably x2 3800s and x2 4600s that didn't make the grade as either a x2 4400 or x2 4800 so they ended up as a lower spec chip instead so that AMD could still make a few quid! You can tell, as they're usually revision E6 instead of E4 and have a Toledo core instead of Manchester. It's not possible to re-enable the other part of the cache unfortunately. Those chips are sposed clock better too apparently though :)

I wasn't planning on overclocking though, my shuttle is hot enough :o

Would any of those chips offer a performance boost against a 4000+ at stock, I'm thinking no, and defo not 140 quids worth =/

If your programmes are multithreaded then yes, but if not then the 4000+ will be faster.

Where I came from, most task improved tremendously. Multi-tasking I'd say got the major boost. Gaming not that much, but put-it down to poor GFX card :(

By the way current CPU is X2 4600+. Old one was a 64 3000+ :)

I got mine second hand (was a retail version though) for £70ish and it is presently sat @ 2.8ghz on stock volts (load temp is 52 degrees C under a scythe ninja)

I have clocked it to 2.95ghz @ 1.425v but load temps a little worrying!

With better cooling this chip should crack 3ghz!

Not bad considering my old 3800 X2 would sit @ about 58 degrees C at 2.5ghz with 1.4v going thru it! :p

if your clocking, then you can get new retail opteron 165's for £99 (well around 105 inc p&p)

one of my pc's is a sn25p and i have a 165 in, yes it is toasty but i guess its expected afterall it does have 2 cores.
