Just about to but a new core 2 cpu, I have been waiting for the price drop, now that its here I would like to know, reading by the specs, if the E6420 will give me the same performance of the E6600, the only difference that I can see is the E6420 stock speed is 2.13GHz and the E6600 is 2.40GHz, both have the 4mb cache,I will be overclocking so is there much difference in performance between the 2? trying to hold of buying the Motherboard to the DFI Infinity P965-s is released.

Both at stock: E6600 faster
Both overclocked: E6600 faster
E6420 clocked to E6600 speeds: identical
Conclusion: buy the E6420 and overclock :)

That's my feeling on it anyway, although it's never cut and dry because the E6600 is cheap now and will overclock to higher speeds than the E6420 due to the higher multiplier.

For the sake of the £25.00 difference is the E6600 the better buy with the higher multiplier then? for what I have been reading so far on these forums far people are saying its luck of the draw with the new E6600 the older ones clock much better!

well i have finished overclocking my E6420 at 3.2mhz could probably gone higher as it booted into windows at 3.6 but got bsod after 20 mins and didnt want to up the vcore more than 1.45 well at this point in time anyway so its running stable at 3.2 with vcore 1.4 temps full load are 46 cruxial ballistix at 1000mhz timings 5 5 5 15 2.2v

hope that helps

.

1.True

2. Both overclocked to same speed, 6420 should be faster due to faster FSB and memory etc..

3. E6420 should be faster, same reasons as 2.

If you could actually get it to run at 3.2mhz i would be very impressed, probably wouldnt even need a heatsink!

Off-topic but I seem to remember that the very first IBM PCs I used back in 1981 ran, at a close to this, 4.77mhz (but needed a heatsink!)....shows how far we have come in 25 years!

The 80186 in the first personal computer I ever used (at school, the RM Nimbus) was clocked at around 6mhz and above. 3.2mhz would be a tasty underclock indeed ;)
