If the spec was:

ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3
Intel Pentium 4 "Northwood" 3.0GHz
TwinMOS 1GB Ram (2x512) Dual channel
2 x Hitachi 160gig Hardrives
Hercules Digifire 7.1 Sound Card

Would it be good for UT2007 and Supreme commander, if its not can you please tell me what would be good for these games.

Thanks, Carl

Yes the gfx card will, not so sure about only 1GB DDR though & can see that been a small issue with the two games named, hence the maybe not. ;)

Yeah that should reduce loading times and any ingame stuttering that might crop up from 1GB. I'm not up on older Intel chips tbh, however if you can get say 8k in 3dmark05 and over 4k in 3dmark06 then would imagine your fine.

Ok good good, my processor has hyper-threading, my computer sees it as two processors, which is good for games i guess, also it has 800mhz FSB speed. Nothing special but all helps.

With that graphics card and a Prescott 3.2ghz, oh and 2gb RAM, I got around 7400 on 3Dmark 2005 without tweaking anything. So there is hope.

Yeah get 2gb fast ram and swap ** cpu for prescot cpu version as its higher fsb i think and faster in general. Then you should be set to go with this years games.

I wouldnt worry about changng the CPU (the cost/performance difference wouldn't be worth it IMO).... not unless you were going to change the whole system and go core2duo.
To pep up your existing system get 2gb low latency pc3200 and the X1950 pro and it should manage things reasonably for a while.
If the budget is tight, get the graphics card now and memory later, theres not an awful lot of games that need above 1gb just yet, but that is the fastest graphics card you will get for AGP now.

Nope northwoords and prescotts have the same fsb (in this case, there are northwoods with 400/533/800 mhz quadpumped fsb and there are 533/800 mhz scotts) and the northwoord is better than the scott on the same clock, the prescott is just more featured (sse3, 64 bit on later socket 775 models, etc...) but its slower by about 5% in gaming on the same clockspeed...
It does tho overclock further, a lot further if cooled properly and it has more cache wich is very usefull in some stuff...

2gb of ram and that gfx card and you'll be fine .

a lot of good games are needing it tho (when maxed offcourse, if you ask why he needs to play it at maxed i respond with why does he want a new gfx then, to play games maxed offcourse :P) :
Comany of Heroes
battlefield 2
Fear
Boilign point road to hell
Half life 2
more...

Thanks for the advise, that's great, ive got a shuttle SB75G2 so im limited.

Im hoping to get the X1950Pro 512MB and 2x1gig low latency 3200 ram to match my current processor.

Believe it or not my current card is the 9800pro, purchased it like 3 years ago for £200

Thats clear things up a bit. Thanks :)

i wouldn't put a prescott in a shuttle, especially the sb75 as it would get very hot. if using the 250w psu it should also run fine on a northie. let me know how much of a difference it makes i'm running almost exactly the same spec shuttle :)

That will do the job and yes 2gb >>is<< requirement if you would like to run high detail on a lot of games from 2005/06 etc and most upcomming titles. Ram wise the G.Skill ZX 3200 range has great tight timings of 2.3.2.5 1T & will even go upto 230 without having to loosen + goes to 270 at 3-4-4-8 with 2.7v. Was allways the best value for money and can be picked up for excellent price if you know where to look these days. People here advised me to buy it long ago and glad they did.

Agreed. That RAM and The Sapphire x1950 would do a great job. Very close to my set-up.
