Will this bottleneck?

I don't mean to high-jack your thread but your system sounds similar to mine.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 3.60GHz
Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Bundle

I've had my HIS ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 for a couple of years now and it's starting to struggle. I'm looking to upgrade to a new ATI 7950 when they are released but I have the same concerns as the OP whether my new card will be bottlenecked. Sorry again for high jacking your thread CBrooksC.

That CPU will massively hold back that 6990!!!!!!!!!

Im not so sure that your comment is accurate fella unless you can provide evidence to the contrary.

My brother is running xfire'd 6850's on a x4 and he's not complaining any.

Ok its not as fast as Sandy but its plenty fast enough for gaming especially at 3.8ghz.

I was running a 4.8Ghz Phenom 2 x6 1075T and even running a single 5850 it still could not push the 5850 to a constant 99% usage in every game.

My 2500k at 4Ghz did with ease...

You will be fine.

My Q6600 at 3GHZ seemed to be fine with an HD5850 1GB overclocked to between 900MHZ to 950MHZ. During Crysis 2 using DX11 Ultra settings and Metro2033 using the highest DX11 settings I was consistently seeing around 100% GPU usage.

Games like Fallout:New Vegas did not show 100% GPU or 100% CPU usage as they barely taxed the CPU or GPU. I also saw the same thing with the Core i3 2100 which I have in my other desktop.

Ha LOL don't worry about it! =D

The madness in this thread, A Phenom II quad will not bottleneck a 6950 or even a 6990 or even crossfire 5850's or 6950's especially if it can be clocked to 4.3ghz...
Personally I would sell your 5850 and get a 2GB 6950. Affordable 7x are going to be a while yet. A 6950 is more than capable of running every game available at 1080p and a noticeable step up from a 5850 especially in games like battlefield which seems to be the bassis of everything right now.

You need to learn what you're talking about, Or better yet go and read some articles comparing Intel CPU'S to AMD ones.

I had a Phenom 2 x6 1075T clocked at 4.8 Ghz and my current 2500k unlocked more performance.

Edit : Read this

Show me some proof that a 4ghz Phenom II will Bottleneck a 6950 or 5850 as mine is certainly not. No doubt an i5 is a better cpu but I doubt whether any gains would show ingame compared to a 4ghz Phenom.

Play any game with an explosion or leads of on screen action and watch the frame rate dive.

If my 4.8Ghz Phenom 2 x6 held back my 5850 then yours will, Can have a bench off if you like later?

The only game I have really tried is BF3 as tbh I think benchmarks are a crap way of determining how a system runs. I prefer to just play a game and if it runs ok its ok.
BF3 @ 1080p ultra settings dips to 30fps when big explosions go off with my 6 core 4ghz Phenom and averages just under 60fps when running around etc. I have also disabled two cores and it makes no difference.
But before saying its the cpu it also does exactly the same on the i 2500k system I have just built for my brother which also uses a 6950. The cpu is clocked to 4.5ghz.

These are only quick tests mind as I have no interest in benchmark scores. The game runs perfectly smooth on both systems and I doubt anyone could tell them apart tbh.

Lmao...using one of the most GPU limited games to test CPU performance is fail, The 2500k will push and keep a GPU to a constant 99% GPU usage no matter what is happening on screen, A Phenom 2 will not and the GPU usage will drop along with the frame rate when things get hectic.

Like I said I have no interest in benchmarks and subjective testing that they bring I just play the games and if they look ok and run ok then that to me says all is running ok. My GPU usage does not drop off in BF3 and if it does it in other games it makes no noticeable difference.

My Q6600 at 3GHZ pushed my HD5850 1GB running at 950MHZ for the core to 100% when running both Crysis 2 at Ultra settings under DX11 and Metro2033 at the highest settings under DX11.

I had a secondary screen with monitoring software running and I could see the CPU and GPU load while running a game.

An HD5850 1GB runs at 725MHZ,which means the GPU was overclocked by 30% and the RAM was overclocked too. I increased the overclocks gradually and saw framerate increases at all stages. My Core i3 2100 is pushed less than my Q6600 in these games and yet still my graphics card is the limiting factor. A Core i3 2100 in the best case scenario is around the same speed as as a 3.7GHZ Phenom II X4 too.

well i had a 1090t @ 4ghz + 6990 & 6950 and it was bottlenecking. my 2700k even at stock gives higher fps.
