hi, i just had a thought a few minutes ago and instantly had to ask you gurus on here. i have recently ordered a set up including a 8800gt i am planning to run it all on my current monitor its an old packard bell one. im new to pc gaming and was wondering will it even work with my new computer, or do i need a new one? what are the requirements of a monitor today?

If a monitor has a VGA connection (or DVI but unlikely on an old monitor) then it will work, the standard hasn't changed for years and is rather unlikely to. The only issue is that you will probably need to use a DVI-VGA adapter as I think most of the 8800GTs are dual DVI. The adapter should come with the graphics card but if not then you can pick them up for under £10. :)

It should be fine. If the monitor only has the small connector for the graphics card on it and does not fit the DVI connectors on the card, there should be an adaptor supplied with the card you can use. Shouldn't be a problem.

brilliant cheers dude, i heard about the dual dvi thing and vga and i aint got a clue which my monitor is, it is really old though so i guess its vga. whats the difference between dual dvi and dvi? will i need a different adaptor? and is the image quality on a dvi monitor a great deal better than a vga one?

Dual DVI just means there are two DVI connections instead of there being DVI and VGA connections (one of each). DVI should technically be 'crisper' because it doesn't have to convert from digital to analogue but that doesn't always make for a more pleasant image. Other monitors might be better than what you have now but that will probably be more to do with other technological advances rather than the connection method, good VGA should be almost indistinguishable in quality from good DVI.

You can get rather too caught up with the technical issues, if you are happy with the quality of the monitor then just go with it. It will be fine. :)

yeh sweet, its an alright monitor for now i just dont have the money at the moment for a system and a new monitor, maybe for xmas though, to be honest i am quite happy gaming at 1024x768. I still think the image looks fairly crisp and at least you get better frame rates for me its performance over image quality. :)
