Someone gave me a lappy to fix, the hdd had gone. The hdd in it is a "hitachi travelstar, 100gb, 4200rpm ide drive". So ive ordered a "120GB Western Digital WD1200BEVE Scorpio, 2.5" IDE (PATA), 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms"

Im a bit corcerned that it wont work cos its not the same drive,, Its for a aser aspire 5000 series laptop?

Should be fine, the interfaces are standard. Size difference won't be a problem either, you occasionally see problems replacing HDDs in older machines and the BIOSes can't handle big disks but you'll be fine with a 120 instead of a 100.

Got the drive this morning,, but having trouble getting any images on it, it. I cannot just slap in the acer recovery cd cos on the lappy it keeps saying a file is missing, but when I run the recovery cds frm my main pc, theres no problem, Ive even tried burning the problem cd again, and even that dont work.

So what ive done Ive recovered the aser partion on my main pc using a old hdd ive got, then I backed up that partition using true image. Then restored it over a network to the lappys hdd, but evern before starting the restoring, it says image corrupted. So I thought I would do the image again, but this time put it on cds,, but still I have the same error. Ive even tried using my winxp cd, but that has probs copying a lot of the files at the start if the install, plus ive even used my backup cd of xp, but still the same again

Im about out of ideas guys,, Should I give up, and give it back to the guy, and say sorry I cant fix it, But ive bought a new hdd for it now, and I guess if I do that he wont give me the money for the hdd ......HELP Guys????

Ive got 1other idea,, buy a converter so the hdd of the laptop will connect into my main pc, and then do the resore like that and hope and pray it works??

It says its only got 958mb of mem, Isnt it ment to be 1024mb wth 1gb in? Im going to take each stick out in turn and see if 1 of the sticks are faulty. Just hope it will work with just 1 stick in it.

The missing memory is about 64MB

this is reserved for Video Memory (Onboard Graphics). Not a problem with the amounts, they are fine

oh.. Well ive taken a stick out, and its working fine now.Going to put it back once windows it all set up and working, and see what happens then.

this thing is getting strang, tried both sticks seprately, and them appear fine, but noww when i use both sticks nothing appears on the screen, or it only picks up aboutt 650mb and wont fully boot in to windows, any ideas guys???

Maybe the old hard drive wasn't broke in the end? Have you tried it with only 1 stick of ram? ;) Dont know why the ram would be playing up though sorry.
