Hey guys, currently overclockers UK are doing a offer on a HIS HD 7950, and I want to get it but I'm not sure if it it'll work in my current rig. The parts that I have bought are:
-650w PSU
-2 x 4GB of 1333Mhz Ram
-AsRock N68c-gs FX
-500GB HDD
-FX 6300 @3.5GHz or 4.1GHz with turbo

Now back to the question! Will it work with my other components or will the GPU be too powerful?
On a side note, will this set up also play BF4 at ultra or this setup but with a XFX HD 7870 instead of a HIS HD 7950? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have a few queries:

What make and model is the PSU?

Have you ran the CPU at full load (with turbo) yet?

The GPU will work but it will be slightly bottlenecked.

BF4 is very CPU heavy and unfortunatly your current CPU and motherboard will hold you back.. I feel that your motherboard will throttle everytime you get near 100% load..

It's a 600w by corsair (non-modular), I am currently buying the parts (I've got the case, RAM, mobo, HDD, PSU So far) and so I haven't ran the CPU at full load no. What do you mean by throttle?

The model of the PSU is the CX600 by Corsair builder series

Motherboard throttling? Are you saying the motherboard is a bottleneck doomed? :/

Yes,

Throttling is basically the CPU having the 'back off' due to the motherboard overheating..

This means the CPU load can bounce around when at the higher end of its operations. This can make it patchy, as the CPU goes to 100%, the motherboard will 'tell it' to 'ease down' to 80% (per se) but then the CPU tries to clock up to 100%.. and so on..

This is quite common on the FX series as the 8*** actually draws more power than its rated for at 100% load.. The 6*** series is also a concern..

As the motherboard chosen doesn't have great cooling i could see it being a bit of an issue, especially if the CPU is overclocked.

My 28 day return date has passed for the motherboard so returning it isn't really an option, so what would you recommend I do? Should I get the HD 7950 or HD 7870 etc...

Im not sure, in the long run the 7950 would be a great choice..

You may be lucky and not experience throttling, but i just thought i should make you aware..

No, the FX 6300 comes with a cooler and the case came with a generic fan in the back of the case which I'm not sure if it will provide any additional cooling to the CPU or not. It will blow air over the place (where the CPU will be on the mobo), so that may count but I'm really not sure! Again, I am still quite new to PCs

Yeah the AMD stock cooler is pretty poor.. I would replace that.

What case do you have?

The best sort of airflow is an intake (or two at the front and a exhaust at the back (back top is also good). You need the air to go through the case otherwise, youll just be left with hot air inside the case..

You may want to remove that links, its against the rules of this forum.

As for the case, Well... Yeah... Only 1 fan.. Not much can be done with that..

You can put a CPU cooler it.. though i don't know much difference it'll make due to the lack of airflow..

Im at a bit of a loss for advice, apart from "get a better case and motherboard"..

Okay thanks for all the help, it's opened up a lot of problems that I could have had! It might be a bit hard selling those two parts but are we allowed to post for sale items on the forums?

Like i say those problems aren't going to 'kill' your rig, its just not going to perform well, especially with a 7950 in that cheap case.

The forum does have a memebers market, but you have to be signed up for 12 months and have 1000 posts to gain access, this is due to scammers spoiling everyones fun!.. You'll have to resort to auction sites, sorry. :)

I might just stick with the XFX hd7870 with the fx 6300. The HD 7870 is slightly more powerful than the HD 7850 which I've seen works perfectly with the set up I've gotten. The fx 6300 and HD 7870 also can get around 40-50fps on BF4 ultra so, I'll still be happy! If I do a bit more research and the mobo and case are a bit crap then I'll have to try and sell them on gumtree I guess, but again, thanks for all the help!

Noes! Do not be scared buy the HIS it is a bargain.

Winter is coming, you will be fine!

Underclock it if you have to in summer, get a new case in the future, whatever... but go for the 7950 and work around it ;)
