So i was thinking of buying an SSD (probably 60gb or 100gb) for my PC... but i was thinking of having my current 1TB drive as storage .. but having it disconnected until i need it? Like use SSD for OS and the usual that i need it for.. then for large files and storage use my HDD would that work? it'd also be quieter i'd imagine at night leaving it disconnected?

The HDD's I use for storage/backup are a bit noisy when busy but 99% of the time I can't even hear them and my PC is fairly quiet.

In principle what you suggest is obviously feasible but I'm not sure you'd gain a lot unless you have a very noisy HDD.

Ideally you could consider backing your data up regularly, which most people can't be bothered to do and some eventually pay the price when they lose everything.

If you do backups then you'll need your HDD in commission each day anyway.

I agree entirely with the idea of an SSD and putting everything on it you frequently use.

You may as well get the full benefit of your investment, although I believe the more you have on it and therefore the less free space, the more important Trim or an alternative is.

Ediit: As suggested, if you are intent on leaving it disconnected, use an external enclosure, or better still if funds will stretch, put the money towards a quieter internal HDD, there are many reasonably quiet ones available, and leave it connected.
